Starting Strong: Back-to-School Tips from GFA’s Division Heads

At GFA, each new school year is a fresh adventure filled with opportunities to learn, grow, and connect. Our division heads—Ms. Verlin (Lower School), Mr. Meyer (Middle School), and Mr. Abel (Upper School)—are sharing their best advice to help students start strong and thrive all year long. From curiosity and kindness to leadership and resilience, their words remind us that every grade brings new ways to shine.

Lower School: Ms. Verlin’s Guide to a Great Year

1. Be Curious
The year will be a wonderful adventure. Ask questions, explore, dig in, and discover something new every day.

2. Be Kind, Even When it’s Hard
We are at our best as a community when we are kind to one another and take care of each other. Small acts of kindness make a big difference.

3. Be Yourself
You are the only you! Bring your ideas, talents, and passions to everything you do. Our community is stronger because of the unique gifts each person brings.

4. Hug the Monster
Be brave and take risks. Hard things can feel a bit scary, but we grow when we face challenges—and we’ve got each other for support!

5. Be Ready for Fun
The possibilities are endless when you try your hardest. Every effort helps you grow, and you’ll be amazed at what you can do!

Middle School: Mr. Meyer’s Tips for Thriving

1. Take Charge of Your Day
Bring what you need. Keep track of assignments. Each day is a new chance to take the lead—you’ve got this.

2. Mistakes Happen. That’s Learning.
Don’t sweat it. Everyone trips up sometimes. The key is bouncing back and trying again.

3. Try Something You’ve Never Tried Before
Clubs. Sports. Electives. Middle School is for exploring—you might surprise yourself.

4. Be the Kind of Friend You’d Want to Have
Include people. Sit next to someone new in the Forum. Say “hi” first. Middle School is better when we all have someone to sit with.

5. Talk to Us. Seriously.
Advisors, teachers, your dean—we’re here to listen. You don’t have to figure it all out alone.

Upper School: Mr. Abel’s Advice for Leading With Purpose

1. Know Yourself, and Lead From There
Understanding your values, your goals, and your challenges is step one in becoming a strong leader.

2. Stretch Towards What Matters
Lean into challenges that align with your goals and passions. Depth often means more than doing it all.

3. Use Your Voice With Integrity
GFA students are change-makers. Speak up in class. Speak out in your community. Back your words with action.

4. Build Relationships With Teachers
Partnership is a cornerstone of Upper School. Ask questions, go to office hours, and show you care—this is how you’ll grow.

5. Remember: Character Counts
Your grades can certainly open doors, but who you are opens hearts. Lead with empathy. Show up with purpose.
