Two Merit Scholar Semifinalists, Six Commended Students

Seniors Meg Nesi and Annabel Roth have been selected as 2020 National Merit Scholarship semifinalists. They all have the chance to compete for one of 7,500 scholarships awarded in the spring.

The students were selected from about 1.5 million high school students nationwide based on their 2019 Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test scores, in which they placed among the highest in the state. From here they will submit an application that details their academic record, community and school participation, leadership roles, employment, honors, and awards.

According to the NMS official announcement, "A semifinalist must have an outstanding academic record throughout high school, be endorsed and recommended by a high school official, write an essay, and earn SAT or ACT scores that confirm the student's earlier performance in the qualifying test."

In February, the two will find out whether they have made it to the finalist level, after which winners will be selected and announced in April. Last year Sean Hogan '19, Patrick Howard '19, Ethan Parker '19, and Willem Shuddeboom '19 were selected as 2019 National Merit Scholarship finalists.

In addition, it was announced this month that six seniors were named to the Commended Students list: Michael Colonna, Nicole Farber, Dilan Patel, Jack Ramsay, Zachary Rothwell, and Kara Ventura.

"Commended Students are being recognized for the exceptional academic promise demonstrated by their outstanding performance on the qualifying test used for program entry," according to the organization.
