Students Address Urban Futures in Fairfield County

Students in Chris Meatto’s “Cities” course have spent the semester unpacking the histories and imagining the futures of cities by engaging with urban issues, planning, and design across a range of topics and case studies. On January 8, GFA welcomed urban planners from cities and towns across Fairfield County to discuss their work.

The McGrath Gallery provided the setting for four student groups from the class to present their research and recommendations to urban planners from Bridgeport, Fairfield, Norwalk, and Stamford. Student presentations ranged from “Designing Inclusive and Sustainable Parks” to “Transit-Oriented Development and Complete Streets.” The visiting urban planners brought their deep experience and knowledge to the conversations that followed and were impressed with the quality of the students’ research and their imaginative proposals.

The real-time format of the course culminated into this open-discussion experience for the students. Meatto reflected that “it was great for our class to talk with, learn from, and essentially pitch their ideas to professionals whose fields we studied all term.” After a semester of research and learning, he noted, “having this event changed the stakes and meaning of our work for the students: now, they had to figure out how to prepare for a different kind of audience. I'm hopeful that students in this class are closer to understanding the collaborative, interdisciplinary nature of solving real-world challenges, and that we are helping the school establish good connections with communities beyond Beachside Avenue."
