On a beautiful November morning, Head of School Bob Whelan joined current and former trustees, architect Roger Ferris, Middle and Upper School student leaders, representatives from Claris Construction, and faculty and staff members to break ground on the site of the Athletics and Wellness Center (AWC), set to open in spring 2026. Realizing this vision for GFA’s next chapter is the result of bold dreams, a belief in the school’s mission, a generous community, and of course, meticulous planning—all themes addressed in the historic ceremony.
“GFA’s foundation is nearly a century deep, and thanks to you, months before our 100th birthday, we’re building on that foundation for the next century.” - Bob Whelan, Head of School
Director of Athletics Eric Lee, members of the Board, and two senior leaders delivered remarks reflecting on their GFA experiences and how the future AWC will create even more opportunities for the types of connection that have defined their time at the school. “I am thrilled, as a student and as an athlete, to witness the creation of a space that will sustain growth, connection, and athletic achievement for years to come,” praised Julia Johnson ’25. Aidan Weismann '25 added, “This new Athletics and Wellness Center embodies spirit, offering students a space to strengthen their minds, bodies, and character.”
As GFA continues to fulfill its Strategic Direction, this moment represents more than a construction project—it is a testament to the forward-thinking spirit of the GFA community. With the 2025 Centennial celebrations on the horizon, the Athletics and Wellness Center symbolizes the beginning of a new chapter that will shape the next 100 years of GFA’s story.
