A crowning achievement to end the season!
In the 26 team Kingswood Invitational Tournament at the Country Club of Farmington today, GFA’s team of underclassmen took 10th place, their best finish ever.
Adorning the crowning achievement, two jewels enhanced the luster of the day.
Enmeshed in a four-way tie for third place in individual honors, freshman Leo Lane returned to the course after a lengthy pause to replay the 18th hole in a four person playoff. Seemingly in a tough situation after finding himself on the downslope of a bunker behind the green, Lane delivered. Spraying sand, his shot came to rest a few feet from the hole where he was able to sink the putt and dismiss two opponents. With one opponent remaining, a second playoff hole sent wedge shots toward the flagstick. From over 10 feet away, Lane sank his putt to add pressure to his opponent’s shorter putt. The ensuing miss propelled Lane to a well-deserved third-place finish in the field of 130 golfers.
An additional jewel enriched the Dragons performance when junior Graham Ackerman was announced the winner of the tournament’s Closest-To-The-Pin contest that took place on the par 3 finishing hole. After each of the 130 golfers took their shots at the pin, Ackerman’s winning distance of 7 ft was easily the best of the day.
The team, which also included junior Nate Thumser, sophomore Felix Chermayeff, and freshman George Weeldreyer, battled the deviously challenging course under chilly, windy conditions more reminiscent of a nasty autumn day.
Concluding the season with three strong tournament showings, GFA golf is looking forward to the future!
