After romping through the regular season, the GFA Ultimate Frisbee was ranked as the No. 1 team in the state.
On Saturday, the Dragons headed to Hebron to put that lofty nod on the line against the rest of the state.
Through four games that covered pool play, the semifinals and the championship game, the Dragons brought a title home to GFA, winning the 2025 State Division II championship.
After out-scoring opponents by a 27-6 count over the first three games (9-0 win over Franklin, a 9-2 win over North Branford and a 9-4 win over Portland), GFA finally faced a stiff test against tournament host RHAM in the finals.
The Dragons went up quickly 2-0, but RHAM regrouped and made it a game. Several lead changes resulted in the game being tied up 7-7 as time wound down.
After some tough, smart, defense, GFA came up with the disc near their end zone and senior captain Jared Buckman called a timeout for the Dragons to draw up the play.
A minute later, Buckman flipped the disc to senior Barrett Bachner in the end zone to for the 8-7 win and the state title.
One season after the team was disbanded midseason due to a lack of players, the program rebuilt and coasted through a 6-0 regular season in which it only gave up 13 goals.
On Saturday, it proved it was the best team in the state.
