Greens Farms Academy wrestling coach Jack Conroy knew he was getting a very special student-athlete when Xavier Giles decided to become a Dragon.
“Xavier is a once in a lifetime athlete,” Conroy said. “His ability to take things in stride while also competing at such a high level is incredibly unique and is a great example for everyone around him.”
On the wrestling mat at GFA or in the classroom, Giles work-ethic has allowed him to thrive; so much so, in fact, that he has committed to wrestle for the Ivy League Princeton University starting in the fall.
Giles was one of 12 Dragon student-athletes feted on Wednesday, March 6, during the school’s annual Spring College Commitment ceremony held inside the Coyle Gym. Those 12 coupled with eight Dragons who committed during the National Letter of Intent signing period in the fall brings the school’s total to 20 different GFA athletes playing in college come fall.
“Princeton has, of course, been known as a great academic institution, and I wanted to learn at the highest level that I could get myself to so that’s why Princeton,” Giles said. “I like that it’s in a beautiful town with plenty of space and opportunities to learn new things and experience things that I have never experienced before.”
The Tigers finished the dual meet season 6-7, placing eighth out of 17 teams at the EIWA Championships. The team sent three wrestlers to the NCAA Championships.
“Of course, I also liked the people on the wrestling team and it’s a program I believe in and will be great,” Giles said. “Plus, I’ve been told I look good in black and orange!”
Conroy is excited to see what Giles can do at the next level.
“He will be a tremendous addition to the Princeton team and I look forward to watching him continue to grow at the next level,” the coach said.
