Ava Stevens loves being on the open water.
So much so, in fact, that Stevens recently announced her commitment to sail for the Cornell University sailing program.
Stevens is one of the eight GFA Dragons who were recently feted during the school's annual early signing period commitment ceremony at the school.
“I chose Cornell not only because of its variety of unique classes but also because of the tightly knit team,” Stevens said. “The team dynamics and the coach were all so welcoming to me, and I immediately felt like the school would be a place where I could thrive.”
While she loves being out on the water, Stevens is one who also loves to learn everything she can about her chosen sport, a nice intangible that has helped her grow as a sailor both within and outside of the GFA program.
“Ava Stevens never stops learning,” GFA sailing coach Peter Coleman said. “She will take her talents to Cornell and continue to progress in her sailing, studies, and life. I noticed she really understands the importance of improving as well as seeking feedback. Ava’s extensive experience in sailing really helped in leading GFA Sailing to qualify for the New England championships. This really shows her dedicated hard work.”
While Stevens thrived in GFA’s small-school atmosphere, she longed for something bigger and found it Cornell.
“I knew I wanted to go to a school with a larger student body, and Cornell was perfect for that with their 15,000 undergrads,” she said. “I am excited to continue my sailing career at Cornell, and I know I will be able to excel both academically and athletically.”
