A very special week is on tap for Greens Farms Academy athletics this week.
There will be a Homecoming, of sorts; a likely milestone, of sorts; a first-time event, of sorts; and a packed house on tap.
Here’s what you can expect from the week ahead in GFA Dragon athletics.
1 – You can go home again
It was Dec. 18, 2018, the last time the Greens Farms Academy boys basketball team played in front of a friendly crowd at the Coyle Gym.
If you’re counting, that’s 36 days between home games for the Dragons, who return to the Coyle for the first time since a 60-58 win over Rye Country Day last year.
The home hiatus—which included two weeks of holiday break and a five-game road trip from Bridgeport to Dobbs Ferry—hasn’t stopped the team from finding success, though.
GFA carries a six-game win streak into Wednesday’s matchup against Masters. The Dragons beat Masters 84-43 back on Jan. 14.
Tip-off on Wednesday is slated for 6 p.m., right after the girls game.
On a side note, another GFA player is closing in on 1,000 career points and could surpass the milestone this week.
2 – The GFA revenge tour
Speaking of the GFA girls, the Dragons will play in a prequel to the boys contest on Wednesday, hosting Sacred Heart at 4 p.m.
In the last two seasons, it was Sacred Heart that knocked GFA out of the FAA playoffs with a 57-49 loss in Greenwich a year ago and a 49-43 defeat two years ago.
This is a different GFA team, though, one which has won nine games already this season.
Last year’s team won nine the whole season.
Sacred Heart, though, is 4-0 in the league and sitting on top of the FAA standings, so the Dragons can make a statement with a win.
3 – Ready to Pack the House
Friday night, the Coyle and the Bedford and—this year—the GFA squash facility will be filled with an energy as the school hosts its annual “Pack the House” night.
The girls basketball team will face Cheshire Academy at 5 p.m., the boys basketball team will host Redemption Christian Academy at 7 p.m.
In the Bedford, the Dragon wrestlers will host Staples at 6 p.m., but for the first time in Pack the House history the squash players tip things off with a match against Staples at 4:15 p.m.
4 – Squashing the rivalry
Staples and GFA share a town, but only special match-ups like this make the rivalry.
The fact GFA’s boys squash program gets to take part in its first Pack the House event is special. Having the cross-town Wreckers as the opponent, adds to it.
The two teams met early in the season with GFA posting a 7-0 win, so it could be a good start to a special day for GFA.
5 – Wrestling with the rivalry
There will be a trophy at stake in this intra-town showdown between the Dragons and the Wreckers.
A year ago, the Dragons won 62-15 after losing the first showdown between the two teams two years ago.
Who will win this year’s rubber match?
Hit the Bedford to find out at 6 p.m. to find out.
