After a strong performance in its first-ever trip to the U.S. Middle School Team Squash Championships a year ago, the Dragons returned for the 2019 tournament and walked away with the No. 11 ranking in the country.
GFA, which was bumped from Division IV to Division 1 this season, went 2-2 in the event and won the Plate finals.
“This year US Squash moved us up into Division I which makes me very proud of our players and their achievements,” Coach Attila Agh said
GFA started the tournament as the bottom seed in Division 1, but passed three teams by the end of the championships, topping Brunswick 4-1 in the plate finals.
Representing the Dragons were: Oscar Hecker, Eddie Xue, Brady Melnick, Max Laferriere, and Michael Fotin.
The Dragons lost to eventual Division 1 runner-up Bronxville 5-0 in its opening match.
Matched up against Fessenden School in the consolation semifinals, the Dragons fell by another 5-0 score.
Then the comeback started.
GFA defeated Millburn by a 3-2 score to advance to the Plate finals.
Xue, Laferriere and Fotin earned wins in that match.
Against Brunswick, Hecker, Xue, Laferriere and Fotin all won.
"The weekend was a memorable experience for all of us and I am extra grateful not only for the great performance of our boys but also the tremendous positive support of the parents as well,” Agh said.
