Former Greens Farms Academy varsity basketball guard Tremont Waters was drafted by the NBA’s Boston Celtics on Thursday night in New York City.

Waters, a resident of New Haven, came to GFA midway through his sixth-grade year and stayed through his middle school years.

He played varsity basketball as both a seventh and eighth grader at GFA.

Waters, who stands 5-foot-11, was the 51st player selected on Thursday.

Now 21 years old, Waters averaged 15.3 points per game and 5.8 assist per game last season at Louisiana State University.

A sophomore, he was also selected as SEC’s co-Defensive player of the Year last season.

ESPN broadcaster Jay Bilas said this about Water’s selection: “Good pick. “He’s just a small guard, but he can absolutely play”

Waters played on the 2013 GFA team that produced a total of four Division 1 players, including Sean Obi (Rice, Duke, Maryland), Pat Ryan (Elon) and Hunter Eggers (Rice).

Three other players from that squad—Matt Tate (Franklin & Marshall), Brien Comey (Kenyon) and Zach Baines (Middlebury/Occidental).
