PreK Birds of Prey Amusement Park

Throughout the spring, the PreKindergartners have been exploring our campus and the neighboring Audubon trails with a particular interest in the birds that inhabit these places. Such investigations inspired the children to build something special for our feathered friends. Students combined their knowledge of birds with our math learning (focused on simple machines) to create Birds of Play: An Avian Amusement Park. This year, one of our final projects in seventh-grade English is to memorize a poem. From Emily Dickinson to Kahlil Gibran to James Baldwin, students are picking out something to learn and hold onto, and as I’ve been watching my students’ submissions, I’ve been wondering why it matters that we memorize poems, wondering what it’s for.
