Zooming with Architects

On January 12, we (the seventh grade) got a better understanding of architecture from Mr. Roger Ferris, who designed GFA’s Performing Arts Center and squash building. He talked to us about how pre-algebra applies itself outside of the classroom.

During that zoom meeting, Mr. Ferris showed us pictures of homes and buildings he had designed, all of which were stunning. Those pictures captivated us and made Mr. Ferris’ lesson more entertaining. He told us about how he used the math we were learning to make sure buildings were secure and to make sure they looked nice (mostly the first one). He also said that there are people who specialize in doing complex problems so that everything runs smoothly.

Toward the end of his presentation, Mr. Ferris showed us a picture of a spiral staircase, and it seems safe to say everybody who saw the picture was in awe. The staircase was beautiful and seemed too perfect to be real. We also realized that the number of hours spent calculating measurements must have been nearly unimaginable.

After his presentation, Mr. Ferris asked us if we had any questions, and while at first there was only one question, at the end we had so many questions that there wasn’t enough time to answer all of them! Overall, this zoom call was one to remember!
