Why I Teach: Volume I

Why I Teach: Volume I

Whether it be a resolution, an intention, or simply a thought, reflection is often something many do surrounding the start of a new year. In the GFA Middle School, faculty were welcomed back on campus with a prompt, “What’s the best part about being a teacher?” This exercise allowed the space for pause and reflection of why educators do what they do — and the results are inspired.

Watching students learn and grow each day and feeling that I have had an impact — maybe small or maybe large — in that transformative process. Laughing every day.
— Meghan Chew, Assistant Head of Middle School for Academics; Math

I love seeing the look on a student's face when they first understand something in class. They don't know they are doing it, but even with the mask, I can see it in their eyes.
— Drew Meyer, Head of Middle School; History

The unscripted moments where you connect with kids on a personal level. And the ensuing smiles, laughs, and knowing eyes that everyone has together. Magic.
— Kathleen Nicholson, Assistant Head of Middle School for Student Life; Science

As an English teacher, I love showing students how powerful good writing can be. Clear writing is clear thinking, and it's a kind of truth-telling, too. And don't we need more people willing to tell the truth these days?
— Michele Ames, English

Having the opportunity to show students they are capable of way more than they thought.
— Kristen Dee, Math; Grade 7 Coordinator; Service Learning Coordinator

Being on my feet all day — active, social, and doing something that matters.
— Megan Ruppel, English Fellow

Being a teacher means that every day is new and different, and every day has its own joy, challenges, and stories.
— Wenqing Zhang, Mandarin; World Languages

It keeps you fresh, adaptable! Things are always changing and challenging you to think differently and empathize.
— Claire Bouyssie, French; Spanish; Global Studies Liaison
