My Flying Wings

My Flying Wings

By Emma Smith '22

As I lay there,
With my eyes fluttering like a butterfly,
they finally give up,
Its two wings are broken and can not fly anymore,
The long fight of keeping my thoughts afloat was over.
They drift out into thoughts into my dreams.
Now comes the truth.
The unsteadiness of having no control is eating away at my curiosity.
The thoughts of right mindfulness all disappear into the night.

Lying there,
the world is mute but my mind is full
My body is numb,
desperate to bat my wings and fly.

Suddenly,

The butterflies flutter back to where it all started,
Fairies of the night heal both wings,
Upon which they were lifted back to the place they belong.

Then,
The fluttering stops.
It was like my eyelids never closed like the flowers of the night.
Like I had just entered a world that didn’t even exist
My own world, with earth's greatest possibilities.
I was finally in a state that gave me the chance to paint my own canvas.

There are no more butterflies.
