The Dragon Den Bake-Off

The Dragon Den Bake-Off

This month, our fourth-grade students embarked on a unique and tasty mathematical adventure —The Dragon Den Bake-Off. The challenge? To use their math skills to design and bake cookies that would be a part of a cooking competition. Fourth-grade lead teacher, Manny Lalonde observed a notable increase in enthusiasm from the outset. "Students became increasingly engaged and eager to apply their knowledge on measurements, fractions, money, and proportions in a baking setting," he said. The Dragon Den Bake-Off was more than just a fun day in the kitchen; it was a hands-on learning experience that reinforced the importance and applicability of math in everyday life. Through measuring, mixing, and baking, students saw firsthand how fractions, for example, are not just numbers on a page but essential tools in creating something delicious.

As the ovens preheated and the aroma of baking cookies filled the air, the excitement among the young bakers was evident. Each group of students meticulously followed their custom recipes, showcasing their understanding of each math concept. Stefania Vendrella, another fourth-grade lead teacher, shared her delight in witnessing the students' collaboration and creativity. "Their excitement in participating, their teamwork, and the pride they felt in their creations underscored the value of hands-on learning experiences," she reflected.

The highlight of the project was the eagerly anticipated judging session. Each group presented their cookies to the judges wearing their custom team aprons.  A panel of guest judges from the GFA community had the delightful task of tasting the cookies. The judging criteria included taste, presentation, creativity, evidence of teamwork, and mathematical content. It was a day for our fourth graders to remember, filled with joy, learning, and, most importantly, cookies.
