"Houses" Find a Home at GFA
Monday, November 21, 2016
In the middle school years, it's tempting to focus on oneself to the exclusion of the bigger picture. As a response, GFA faculty look for ways to help students see themselves in a larger context, outside of their natural group of friends. This summer, Middle School officials decided that one way to foster a broader sense of community would be to institute a "House" system. Think Harry Potter and the four houses of Hogwarts.

The PreK Farmers Market began with a seed of inspiration ... and lots of hard work. Sarah Bayzick's PreK students spent the fall learning the ins and outs of plant life — a journey that took them from seed to table, with many stops along the way.

Putting It Together: Patrick Howard '19 and Macy Lawton '18
Wednesday, November 09, 2016
"Teamwork" isn't always the first word that springs to mind when thinking about actors. Words like "prima donna," "diva," or perhaps the more innocuous "star" often pop up instead. But when it comes to sharing the spotlight in GFA's upcoming production of Oklahoma!, the musical's two lead actors work together beautifully. Patrick Howard '19 and Macy Lawton '18 play the respective roles of Curley and Laurey, a cowboy and farm girl who become romantically entangled amid trying times in the burgeoning territory.

Setting the Stage: Janise Park '20
Tuesday, November 01, 2016
This fall GFA freshman Janise Park faced a dilemma: get involved with the fall musical or continue her commitment to the Greater Bridgeport Youth Orchestra, where she's been playing violin for 12 years. She was pretty sure there was no way she could do both. But to her delight (and to the delight of the GFA Theatre Department), she learned that this wasn't the case. Now, for the GFA premiere of "Oklahoma!," she has become an integral part of the show as a stage manager and a member of the pit orchestra.

10 Tips for Maintaining a Civil Discourse
Tuesday, October 11, 2016
An excerpt from a speech on "Civil Discourse," as presented by GFA history teachers Robert Guffin and Erin O'Grady. "We have been asked to speak to the school community about the ways in which it's possible to have a civil conversation about politics during this very heated part of the election season. This seems particularly important this year given the unprecedented nature of this presidential campaign. We will present some general rules or recommendations that will hopefully help you have a spirited conversation about any controversial subjects without personal attacks and the acrimony that is too common in today's public discourse."

"Oklahoma!" Premieres Nov. 17
Wednesday, September 28, 2016
The Upper School fall performance of "Oklahoma!" will be November 17-19 in the Performing Arts Center. Based on the play "Green Grow the Lilacs," by Lynn Riggs, "Oklahoma!" was adapted into a musical in 1943 by Richard Rodgers and Oscar Hammerstein II.
