An independent co-ed day school for grades Pre K-12

Human Ecology and Sustainability

"Quisque pro omnibus, each for all."

We strive to engage the entire community in education and events so they can have a positive impact on the school and beyond, embodying the GFA motto, "Quisque pro omnibus, each for all." We want to give our students the knowledge, skills, and attitudes they need to create sustainable solutions for the future.

Greens Farms Academy is one of just five independent schools in the country that has earned a Green Ribbon School Award from the U.S. Department of Education, recognizing GFA as a national leader in environmental responsibility. Learn more about how the school earned this distinction.

Environmental Responsibility

Some of the many environmentally responsible practices in place that keep our campus pristine:

Fertilizing without synthetic pesticides:

  • Using organic fertilizers like poultry manure, kelp, seaweed extracts, and fish emulsions

  • Aerating our athletic fields three to four times per year to combat compaction

  • Overseeding our fields regularly to maintain turf density

  • Hand weeding our playing surfaces all in an effort to keep our fields safe and consistent for our athletes

Mulching leaves back to the soil:

  • Reduces waste going to landfills

  • Reduces carbon footprint

  • Improves soil health

  • Reduces fertilizer input

Planting primarily native plants throughout campus:

  • Planting grasses that require minimal fertilization and water

  • Native plants support the local ecosystem

Creating a 7,500-square-foot butterfly meadow:

  • GFA was recently was certified as a Monarch Butterfly Waystation.

  • This meadow contains more than 20 native plants and tremendous biodiversity that attracts a wide variety of pollinators, including the Monarch Butterfly.

Turf Technology

When it came time to install our artificial turf, GFA sought the most environmentally responsible option available. Our turf field infill, a combination of sand and extruded cork composite, was selected because it is both environmentally friendly and a healthier option than crumb rubber. Read more about our turf upgrade and Janet Hartwell's letter about our turf field
