| back | | Von Kohorn Speaker: Nancy McTague-Stock | | | The Von Kohorn address allows a faculty member to talk to Middle and Upper School students about an aspect of their life that they don’t usually share in the classroom. On December 6th, visual arts teacher Nancy McTague-Stock discussed her lifelong intrigue with cultural influences that were not her own. Beginning with using her high school Spanish on a family vacation in Puerto Rico, Nancy described her immersion into the cultures of Italy, Germany, the United Kingdom, France, Japan, and finally China as her career progressed and she was asked to work and travel around the globe. Often starting with a pocket dictionary and book of simple phrases, she was able to develop a conversational knowledge of many languages, and more importantly, to absorb the artistic ethos of each country where she worked.
Italian craftsmanship and design, German light, Scandinavian fabrics, British sweaters, the simplicity and ceremony of Japanese life all contributed to her palette as she designed clothing and accessories. A teacher now as well as a working artist, Nancy encourages her students to travel and learn other languages in order to gain a more complete perspective of one’s place in the world. | | back | |
