Jacqueline Novogratz, GFA's Fall 2011 Coyle Scholar
Fall 2011 Coyle Visiting Scholar

On Tuesday, November 29, Jacqueline Novogratz, Founder and CEO of Acumen Fund, spoke to Upper School students during the day and made a public presentation in the evening. Her talk fit with the mission of the World Perspectives Program at GFA, to instill a deep understanding of the issues facing our local and global communities, particularly those related to health, climate and population growth.

Jacqueline described Acumen Fund, which invests in social enterprises, emerging leaders and breakthrough ideas in an effort to eradicate poverty around the globe. They've learned strong lessons through trial and error and work around the world on generating trust, partnering with local governments, backing strong local leadership and operating under the idea that dignity is more important than wealth to the human spirit. Two students listening to Jacqueline's presentation declared, "This is what we want to do with our lives."

"We were inspired by the school’s culture of building character and its sense of community around global issues."

Jacqueline talked with a large audience in the evening at GFA and held a Q&A session afterward. She discussed more of the financial model of Acumen Fund in the evening, answering questions about how the organization chooses entrepreneurs to invest in, what the returns on their investments are and what their goals are for the next five years. The next day, Forbes Magazine released its December 19th issue with Jacqueline on the cover.

The representatives from the organization who came to GFA said of their visit, "We were inspired by the school’s culture of building character and its sense of community around global issues." GFA looks forward to continued contact with Acumen Fund and its work.
