'85 wanted to give back to his alma mater
in a meaningful way. A Hollywood actor and producer, Patrick chose to pay
tribute to beloved former GFA Science Department Head Roger True who brought
scientific inquiry alive for his students.
Patrick writes, "I
established The Roger B. True Scientific Research Fund in 2007 to honor GFA's
longest-serving science teacher and to recognize and encourage scientific
research. Each spring an award is made to
a rising junior or senior who has planned an advanced independent study research
project for the following year. Ideally, the winning student will demonstrate a
creative passion for his or her project that is in the spirit of Roger True’s teaching.
The award will help cover project expenses that fall outside the regular
department budget.
Another key component of the
Fund for me is the “pay it forward” concept. I hope that every student who wins
the award will make a gift back to the Fund during his or her lifetime. While
there is no time limit or payment schedule implied, I want to foster greater
alumni involvement with GFA. In fact, I hope to inspire all alumni to give
back--if not to this Fund, then in the way that means the most to them."
