Young Alums Provide Post-Graduation Perspectives to Upper School |
On Tuesday, January 4, several young alumni returned to campus to speak to the Upper School about their post-graduation experiences.
Ally Norton '09, a sophomore at Boston College, detailed her experience in an a cappella group and described the advantages of attending school in an urban area. She emphasized how prepared she felt arriving at BC from GFA, especially in the field of writing.
Jeff Velez '10, a freshman at Brown University and the first in his family to attend college, shared his wisdom on time management and the importance of exploring unfamiliar fields of study and extracurricular activities.
Ellie Monroe '10, in the middle of a gap year before starting at Tufts University in the fall, explained how she came to choose a gap year and how such an experience is helping her grow in ways that a typical classroom environment could not. Ellie spent the first several months of the academic year in South Africa, working on a game reserve and volunteering in an orphanage for children with HIV/AIDS and Fetal Alcohol Syndrome. She has now headed to New Zealand to work at an arts festival.
Emily Blum '10, a freshman at Whitman College in Walla Walla, WA, provided her perspective on attending a college outside of the northeast, and on the importance of structuring free time appropriately, something she has done with two on-campus jobs.
