The GFA Varsity Field Hockey team (1-1) played a tough game against league rival Convent of the Sacred Heart, losing 2-0 on Monday, September 19. Convent had a tough time getting any wide open lanes to goal as GFA's tough midfield hustled throughout the entire game. In the end though, Convent's experience enabled them to create many more penalty corners and shots, leading to their two goals in the second half. The midfield line of junior captain Madison Leonard and sophomores Maggie Sherin and Hayley Holzinger were tough to get by and continued to disrupt the flow of Convent's passing. Freshman Nicole Litt had a few beautiful runs on the forward line but found it tough to get through the Convent defense. Junior CJ Rummelsburg played outstanding at center back supported by the defense of sophomore JJ Ratray, senior captain Isabelle Canaan and junior Ashley Hutchison. Freshman goalie Jenny Ross continues to be stellar as she had 15 saves in the game. The Lady Dragons will be back in action on Thursday when they head to The Masters School for a 4:30pm contest.

The GFA varsity field hockey team played some of its best hockey against Canterbury this season even though it came up short losing 1-0 on Wednesday, October 26. The Dragons did not shy away from the #1 ranked C school in New England as they continued to apply offensive pressure but had a tough time getting opportunities close to cage. Both teams were scoreless in the first half. GFA continued to possess the ball beautifully as the defensive unit of Isabelle Canaan, Juliet Fontana, CJ Rummelsburg and Ashley Hutchison were patience and agressive and the midfield line of Hayley Holzinger, Madison Leonard and Maggie Sherin continued to send balls to the forward line. Canterbury capitalized on a miscommunication in GFA's defensive end midway through the second half, as a Canterbury player tipped in a ball past Jenny Ross for the 1-0 lead. GFA forward Olivia Taylor has numerous runs down the field, but could not get the ball past the Canterbury defense. Canterbury's 1-0 lead held as the final score, despite GFA's strong effort. GFA will be back in action next Thursday and Friday against Hamden Hall and Choate. |

The GFA varsity field hockey team (5-10) came out strong offensively dominating play in the first few minutes against a talented Choate team. Only 40 seconds into the game, GFA capitalized on its first corner opportunity when junior Hayley Holziner inserted the ball to teammate Maggie Sherin who blasted a beautiful shot to cage. Sherin shot was deflected in by junior Margot Bruder for the quick 1-0 lead. GFA's lead was short-lived as Choate put up two quick goals in the next couple minutes. GFA continued to battled, but Choate has answers as they put in three more goals in the first half. GFA's defense regrouped in the second half and outplayed Choate for stretches of time, creating multiple scoring opportunities and corners. GFA finally capitalized when junior CJ Rummelsburg carried the ball in herself and shot a powerful ball past the Choate goalie for the Dragons' second goal of the game. GFA continued to battle but it was Choate who scored the last goal for the 6-2 final score. Despite a few defensive mistakes, GFA possessed the ball beautifully creating 10 shots on goal and 5 corners. Sherin was stellar in the midfield alongside Holziner and junior captain Madison Leonard. Defensively, junior Ashley Hutchison, freshman Juliet Fontana, senior captain Isabelle Canaan and Rummelsburg played a strong game. Freshman goalie Jenny Ross had 10 saves. GFA will play its last two games next week against Westover and Ethel Walker to close out the season. |

GFA's midfield line of junior Madison Leonard and sophomore Hayley Holzinger and Maggie Sherin continued to put pressure on the Ethel Walker defense. Sophomore Olivia Taylor and junior CJ Rummelsburg had multiple chances in the circle, but could not capitalize. GFA came out in the second half determined to put goals on the board. The Dragons' hard work finally paid off when Taylor dribbled the ball herself into the circle and shot the ball past the Ethel Walker goalie to tie the game 1-1. GFA dominated play in the second half, but ran out of time. GFA outplayed Ethel Walker in the overtime, but came out with 1-1 tie. Rummelsburg, Leonard and Taylor all had chances on net. Freshman goalie Jenny Ross had 8 saves in the game. GFA ended its season 5-10-1. Madison Leonard was named to the FAA All-League team and Maggie Sherin was named to the FAA Honorable Mention team.
