In GFA's third match in as many days, the team traveled to Greenwich to take on FAA rival Convent of the Sacred Heart. Having beaten Convent last year for the first time in many years (4-3), GFA was anxious to repeat the victory. In very strong performances on all courts against a talented Convent team, GFA swept the match 7-0. Playing 1 singles, Frankie Garofalo nabbed an impressive win against a tenacious and experienced Convent senior. Playing long points in tight games, Garofalo found her self down 3-4 in the first set. Garofalo played extremely tough and smart the next three games, winning them all to take the first set. She then cruised through the second set, winning the match 6-4, 6-0. At 2 singles, Kyja Kutnick also had a challenging match, but stayed steady and patient to win 6-4, 6-4. In the match of the day, Caitlin Rummelsburg narrowly lost the first set to her hard-hitting Convent opponent in a tiebreaker. The next set was as entertaining as tennis gets, with beautiful points between two very talented players. Rummelsburg upped her level of play significantly, hitting screaming winners and serving beautifully. She never let down, winning the second set and taking the third set tiebreaker, giving up only a handful of points, winning with a final match score of 6-7(5), 6-2, 1-0(3). Rounding out the singles sweep was Hayley Sanzone at #4, improving her season record to 8-0 with a 6-0, 6-0 win.
In doubles play, Olivia Kjorlien and Avery Wolfe dominated yet again, 6-1, 6-0. They remain undefeated this year. At second doubles, Regi Monroe and Taylor Schendel took a set to figure out their opponents, then went straight to the win column, 7-5, 6-2. Jessica Liu and Emily Cahill were a force to be reckoned with at third doubles, winning 6-1, 6-2. In a fourth doubles exhibition match, Georgie Garner teamed up with sophomore Maggie Sherin (Weston), winning 6-1. |
