Wednesday, April 4th, off Southport, CT the Greens Farms Academy Sailing team opened their season racing against undefeated Brunswick and Daniel Hand, in strong winds ranging from 15-25 knots. Brunswick took the starts and dominated the Water Dragons up the racecourse, finishing 1,2,3 in both races with a 2-0 victory in the end. Against Daniel Hand, GFA fell in the first race, with finishes of 3,4,5, then came back in the second race with finishes of 2,3,4, clinching the second race. In the third race, GFA stayed afloat in the increasing winds, while a boat from Daniel Hand capsized at the leeward mark. GFA finished with a 1,2,4 winning that race and securing a 2-1 victory over Daniel Hand. Executing good boat handling techniques in the strong winds and using good team racing tactics proved favorable to earn the Water Dragons their victory over undefeated Daniel Hand. Sailing for GFA were skipper senior Emily Petno (New Canaan,) with crew sophmore Andrew McCarthy (Fairfield,) skipper senior Bridgette Foster (Southport,) with crew sophmore Charlotte Frank (Norwalk) and junior Liz McDermott (Darien) and skipper senior Jack Kauffman (Darien) with crew sophmore Allie Nixon (Rowayton.) |

Wednesday, April 11th, off Southport, CT the Greens Farms Academy Sailing team handedly beat Fairfield Ward and lost to Fairfield Ludlowe and Stamford. Against Warde, the GFA sailing team took the starts and dominated Warde up the racecourse, finishing 1,2,3 in the first race and 1,2,4 in the second race securing a 2-0 victory in the end. Emily Petno with crew Andrew McCarthy sailed fast keeping her first place position around the course. Jack Kauffman with crew Allie Nixon followed closely behind, making sure no opponents passed them. In the meantime, Bridgette Foster with crew Liz McDermott wreaked havoc on the back of the pack opponents, pushing them further back through exciting boat handling maneuvers, allowing her top two teammates to extend their lead. It was exciting racing to watch! Against Fairfield Ludlowe, GFA fell in the first race, with finishes of 3,4,5. Petno and Kaufmann got pinned at the start and were slow off the line. In the second race, Petno sailed fast, finishing first but her teammates were deep in the pack and could never recover. In both races against Stamford, the racing was close. In the first race Stamford ended up with a 2,3,5 and GFA with a 1,4,6. Again Petno dominated around the course. Foster caught up to 4th place up the last beat but ran out of time to do a passback for Jack to move up. In the second race, hitting a mark and fouling another boat resulted in GFA having to do spins, costing them the race. Stamford ended up victorious, winning both races. The GFA Water Dragons showed much improvement today over last week’s racing, both in their starts and in their team racing maneuvers. Their record now stands 2 and 3. Sailing for GFA were skipper senior Emily Petno (New Canaan,) with crew sophmore Andrew McCarthy (Fairfield,) skipper senior Bridgette Foster (Southport,) with crew junior Liz McDermott (Darien) and skipper senior Jack Kauffman (Darien) with crew sophmore Allie Nixon (Rowayton.) Their next race is Wednesday, April 18th where they will face off against Greenwich Academy, Greenwich High School and Brunswick. On Friday, April 20th, they head off to Newport for the weekend to compete in the O’Day Qualifiers, a major high school fleet racing event. The success of the water dragon’s season will come down to executing good boat handling skills and starts, learning aggressive maneuvers and employing knowledge of the rules, making good tactical decisions up the racecourse and working together as a team! |

Wednesday, April 18th, off Greenwich, CT, the Greens Farms Academy Sailing team lost to league leaders Greenwich High School and Brunswick. Winds were shifty and light, not ideal conditions for racing. Greens Farms Academy got good plays in and were in the mix in all their races. Against GHS, Greens Farms Academy finished 4,5,6 in the first race and 3,4,5 in the second race. According to Coach Ginny Worcester, “ Our starts cost us the first race – two of our boats were over and it’s hard to recover after that.” They sailed a great race in the second, keeping 6th place position behind them, but were never able to catch the leaders up the racecourse. Against Brunswick, in the first race, Brunswick dominated off the starting line. Petno’s outstanding speed earned her a first place finish across the finish line but her teammates were too deep to catch up. In the second race, the Water Dragons were in the lead around the top mark, after sailing an outstanding first beat. Into the offset mark, one of the Brunswick teams drew a questionable foul against Kauffman, resulting in Kauffman having to do spins. This hurt because it pushed Kauffman back from 3rd to 6th. GFA lost to Brunswick 0-2. Their team racing record now stands 2 and 5. Sailing for GFA were skipper senior Emily Petno (New Canaan,) with crew sophmore Andrew McCarthy (Fairfield,) skipper senior Bridgette Foster (Southport,) with crew junior Liz McDermott (Darien) and skipper senior Jack Kauffman (Darien) with crew sophmore Allie Nixon (Rowayton.) Substitutes were sophmores Olivia Taylor (Fairfield) and Isabelle Swearington (Darien.) |

On Saturday, April 21st, the Water Dragons headed off to Newport for the weekend to compete in the O’Day Qualifiers, a major high school fleet racing event. Winds were moderate with periods of fog rolling in interrupted by occasional rays of sunshine throughout the day. At least, there was no rain. The Water Dragons ended up respectably 7th out of 11 competitive teams. Nine races were sailed for each division. Sailing for A division were seniors Emily Petno (New Canaan) and Bridgette Foster (Southport.) Highlights of theirs included two firsts and a second. In the first race they were in 3rd place and dropped to 10th, after fouling a boat near the windward mark. They sailed well, had fun sailing together and ended up 4th in their division in a three way tie. Sailing for B division were senior Jack Kauffman (Darien) and junior Liz McDermott (New Canaan.) Kauffman and McDermott showed steady improvement in their boat handling throughout the day. The pit crew of sophmores Olivia Taylor, Charlotte Frank and Isabelle Swearington were a huge help, providing support on the docks, team morale and good cheer. Plenty of photographs were taken. Viewing was spectacular off the docks of Ida Lewis. St. Georges handedly took the event with Portsmouth Abbey and North Kingston finishing second and third.
Their next race will be held on Wednesday, April 25th, off Grass Island, Greenwich, where they will face off against Greenwich High School, Fairfield Prep and Rye Country Day School. On Sat. April 28th, the Water Dragons will compete in the CT State Championships, held up at the Coast Guard Academy in New London. |

On Saturday, April 28th, the Water Dragons headed up to The Coast Guard Academy, in New London to compete in the CT State Championships. An unprecedented number of Connecticut high school teams were there this year, totaling 19 schools in all. It was a cool, brilliantly sunny day with winds ranging from 8-18 knots. The breeze shifted throughout the day from NW to SW, with strong puffs and pockets of lulls keeping the sailors on their toes. A strong current played a huge factor on the racecourse, as well. Ten races were sailed for both divisions. Getting a decent start, playing the shifts, sailing toward the puffs and staying on the lifted tack were the key ingredients to a successful outcome. The GFA Water Dragons ended up 15th overall, consistently finishing just below mid-fleet. Sailing for GFA was senior Bridgette Foster (Southport) with crew sophmore Andrew McCarthy (Fairfield,) sailing in A Division and senior Jack Kauffman (Darien) with crew Liz McDermott (Darien) sailing in B Division. Substitutes for the day were sophmores Allie Nixon (Rowayton) and Olivia Taylor (Fairfield) who switched in for the last few races of the day. Hotchkiss came out on top with Greenwich High School a close second. It was a learning experience for the Water Dragons who won it in 2010.
Their next race will be held on May 2nd against Darien High School off Noroton. |
