The GFA Boys Varsity Basketball team rolled into St Luke's and came away, for the first time ever, with a win; a very convincing 61-35 win. Per Coach Scott “I want to win games this year by being one the best defensive teams in New England. For our 12 guys to go in there and hold every Storm player to eight points or less, is clearly a strong start to toward that goal”.
Sean Obi picked up right where he left off last year, extending his consecutive double-double streak to 24 games. Obi was huge with 28 points and 19 rebounds. Junior running mate Hunter Eggers worked the long shot for 13 points, and 7th grader, Tremont Waters poured in 12 with several dazzling moves.
Other new faces to the team were outstanding. Matt Tate showed that he might take a run at the school assist record, dishing out 10 in his Dragon debut. Freshman Zach Baines thrived as defensive backstop, with five blocks and seven rebounds. 6”5’ Patrick Ryan made the St Lukes’ guards wilt from his high pressure defense, while returning senior Will Pavlis played three different positions and thrived in them all. Kam Mickens hit a gorgeous three from the deep corner and co-Captain Brien Comey ran the team with calming intelligence. Christian Papic once again demonstrated his defensive prowess, and Scott Deutsch and Van Barnet rounded out the team effort with several minutes of excellent contributions. The team will look to keep the young season perfect when they travel to Rye Country Day School for a match-up on Thursday afternoon. |

Fouls Sink Dragons at Rye
The Boys Varsity Basketball team sent Rye Country Day to the foul line 31 times on Thursday, decimating their own key starters’ playing time in doing so. Rye (3-1) extended a six point halftime lead into a 82-63 rout. Despite the loss, several Greens Farms hoopsters played well. Patrick Ryan broke out with a 20 point, seven rebound performance, Brien Comey pulled down seven boards, and Tremont Waters hit four three pointers, ending the night with 15 points. Sean Obi, despite foul limited minutes, scored 10, assisted on three baskets and rebounded 13 times. Hunter Eggers scored nine and assisted on six. Zach Baines came off the bench to score, rebound, assist and block a shot. The Dragons look to get back in the win column on Saturday when they travel to FAA rival Brunswick for a 5:00pm tip. |

Led by the smothering defensive performances of Patrick Ryan and Brien Comey, GFA emerged from Greenwich with an impressive 54-45 win over Brunswick on Saturday night. Ryan handcuffed Brunswick’s returning All FAA shooter, Devin Mehra into scoring only one basket. Comey went toe to toe with Ivy League prospect, 6’9” Billy Murphy, while rebounding 11 boards and scoring six points.
Brunswick tried a couple of different zone defense schemes early. GFA’s Tremont Waters (nine points and eight assists), Hunter Eggers, Kam Mickens and Christian Papic shot them out of that strategy. Eggers excelled, scoring nine, assisting on four and pulling down five. This forced Brunswick to go to a man to man scheme, and that is when Sean Obi went to work. Obi scored twenty points, while pulling down 19 rebounds. Freshman Zach Baines and Senior Will Pavlis were also impressive in the win.
Brunswick only had 13 points at the half, but rallied back to take a brief 42-41 lead. That comeback seemed to zap them as GFA countered with a strong finish and the 54-45 final. Per Coach Scott, “They made a terrific second half run at us. I was pleased with the way that we stood right back up, and retook control of the game.” The Dragons will try to make it two-in-a-row on Monday when they travel to the Harvey School for a 5:00pm start. |

Dragons Beat Harvey in a Track Meet
The Boys Varsity Basketball team drew on its deep, 12 man bench to run with the Harvey School in a 82-73 win Monday. Harvey pushed the ball aggressively, generating for themselves, 36 trips to the foul line. The Dragon’s received balanced scoring, but were carried in the first half by Hunter Eggers' 17 points and in the second half by Sean Obi's 20 points. Obi got his points on an amazing 10 for 11 shooting, all while pulling down 20 rebounds.
Middle School sensation Tremont Waters was at it again, netting 10 points and dishing out nine assists to his elders. Sophomores Kam Mickens scored nine and Matt Tate scored eight. Zach Baines put up nine points and pulled down seven rebounds.
Brien Comey matched Obi for a game high three blocked shots. Christian Papic did not miss either of the two shots that he attempted. Wills Rooney debuted playing some lock-down defense on Harvey’s big gun. Senior Will Pavlis started at forward, and Van Barnet and Scott Deutsch both put in season highs in minutes-played to insure the win.
On Wednesday, the Dragons (3-1) wrap up their challenging five away games in eight days opening schedule by traveling to take on the defending New England and double FAA champions, Hamden Hall. Hamden Hall is returning every player from last year’s triple-title team. Tip off is set for 4:30pm. |

The Boys Varsity Basketball had the defending NEPSAC Champion Hamden Hall Hornets on the ropes, but could not finish them off. GFA led at the half, and as late as 2:30 to go in the game, but that lead slipped through their hands and turned into a 61-54 defeat.
After the game Coach Scott remarked that, “that entire team has played together and been winning at a high level for a couple of years. My guys have been playing together for about a week. I think that showed in the second half, when they were just a little more certain about what they needed to get done.”
College scouts were in heavy attendance at this game, showing explicit interest in eight different players. Hunter Eggers stepped up to the opportunity with 12 points, and four assists. Tremont Waters continued to impress, coming off of the bench to score 10 and dish out three. Matt Tate led the game with five assists, and scored nine. Sean Obi, despite being doubled teamed by a 6’8” and a 6’7” college bound players, still kept his amazing 28 game, double-double streak going. He scored 10 and pulled down 13 rebounds, and he passed out of the double-team for four assists. Patrick Ryan chalked up eight points, and Brien Comey scored five.
After completing this first crazy stretch of five games in eight days, the Dragons will now get an extended break to prep intensively for the heart of the season. Last year, the Dragons came out of the Christmas break and set a school record for consecutive wins. Their first home game on will be on January 5, against the current FAA standings leader Rye Country Day (3-0). |

Shooting Woes Slay Dragons
The Boys Varsity Basketball team fell to FAA unbeaten Rye Country Day 58-48. It was the first game back after the holiday break, and the GFA shooting touch seemed to still be on vacation. The team missed 36 points of shots from less than 10 feet from the basket. The defensive energy was there though, GFA held Rye to only 19 first half points, and had as much a 11 point lead in the first half. A brutal stretch of turnovers and missed shot after missed shot sunk the Dragons in the second half.
Sean Obi was outstanding, scoring 24 points, pulling down 23 rebounds, and blocking six shots. His rebound mark was just one shy of tying his own school record. He also extended his amazing 29 game consecutive double-double streak.
Hunter Eggers had a solid game, putting up 11 points and making a couple of assists. Matt Tate played a season high of 27.5 minutes and made five assists. Tremont Waters kept his three point shooting streak intact. The seventh grader has made at least one three pointer in all six varsity games that he has played for GFA. Wills Rooney got himself off of the injured reserve list and contributed to the strong defensive effort. Freshman Zach Baines pulled down eight rebounds in eight minutes of play. Brien Comey, Patrick Ryan and Will Pavlis all contributed heavy minutes.
The Rye game is the first of a busy stretch for the boys team. Tonight they take on the GFA Alumni. Tomorrow they host Brunswick in the “Pack the House” game (bring your family and friends!), and then Monday, they travel to play Chase Collegiate. |

School Records Fall at “Pack the House”
Playing in front of a record sized, standing room only crowd, the Boys Varsity Basketball team responded with a tremendous defensive performance. They handcuffed New England A class, Brunswick into a 51-40 loss.
To honor the record setting crowd, Matt Tate increased his assists-in-one game record to 11, and Sean Obi shattered his rebounding record by pulling down an amazing 30 rebounds. Obi also scored 14 points, which extended his untouchable, “double-double” record to 30 consecutive games.
Brien Comey matched Obi’s five blocked shots number, scored ten points and rebounded eight. Hunter Eggers scored 13 and rebounded seven times. Patrick Ryan scored six and Zach Baines pulled down seven.
On Monday, the team heads to Waterbury to take on fellow New England C class, Chase Collegiate. They hope to add a win to their NEPSAC tournament bid resume. |

The Boys Basketball Varsity team used its entire roster in a 60-51 win over Chase Collegiate. With Chase being in the same NESPAC division, the win should aid the Dragons’ quest to qualify for the New England post season tournament. Matt Tate recorded his third game of double digit assists, with 10. Tremont Waters put up a game high of 13 points in only 12 minutes of play, adding five assists. Hunter Eggers scored 13, rebounded six and assisted on four. Sean Obi scored 12, rebounded 14 and blocked four shots. Patrick Ryan was also a stat leader with 10 points, four rebounds and an assist.
Brien Comey, Wills Rooney, Van Barnet, Kam Mickens, Scott Deutsch, Zack Baines and Will Pavlis all booked solid minutes and contributed to the win.

Varsity Basketball Keeps it Exciting The GFA Boys Varsity Basketball team relaxed a bit on a 12 point second half lead, allowing King School to tie the game with four seconds left in regulation. That apparently was a great wake up call, as GFA came back to solidly control the extra period and grab a 73-67 FAA win. Sean Obi was a force. The GFA junior scored 29 points, grabbed 26 rebounds and blocked six shots. That impressive lead act was matched by a deep supporting cast. Senior Co-Captain, Brien Comey grabbed 10 boards and scored six. Junior Co-Captain, Hunter Eggers scored 12 and dished out three assists.
Not to be outdone, sophomore Matt Tate is on a pace to shatter the school assist record. He handed out six in this game and is averaging just under five per game, well ahead of Dan Chase’s 3.5 apg school record. Tate also stole the ball six times from the King offense. Tremont Waters is also well ahead of that record pace, with a 4.2 apg. Waters also scored 10 points against King.
Other new faces to the varsity squad also made big contributions. Pat Ryan scored 10 points, including key scores in the OT period. He also rebounded five times, assisted on four and locked down on the King scorers. Zach Baines played bigger than his 6’2” frame and more mature than his freshman age. “Young Z” grabbed six rebounds, made a steal, and hit a three pointer in his five point total.
The Dragon defense was able to stay fresh in the OT period, bolstered by the athletic hustle of Kam Mickens, Wills Rooney and Will Pavlis in regulation play. The Dragons will be back in action after the long weekend when they host Hopkins on Wednesday; tip-off is set for 3:30pm. |

Youth was served, as a very young GFA squad took down a senior-laden Hopkins team 54-44 in boys varsity basketball. 9th grader Zach Baines (8 points, 10 rebounds), 7th grader Tremont Waters (9 points, 5 assists), and sophomore Matt Tate (10 assists, 10 rebounds and four steals) were big factors in the win. GFA's Sean Obi, was solid with 16 boards and 13 points, but it was actually while he was on the bench in foul trouble, that the Dragons started to take over the game. Waters’ long, long range three pointers, loosened up the sagging Hopkins’ zone, allowing Baines’ high energy and Tate’s crafty passes to start tearing it apart. The team roared back from a 10 point first half deficit, and then never looked back.
The Dragons' defense also played a large role in tonight's victory. Patrick Ryan, Will Pavlis, Hunter Eggers and Tate held Hopkins two returning All-FAA scorers to just one basket each. The team only allowed Hopkins a mere 12 points in the entire second half. Eggers put up a double-double in points and rebounds and Brien Comey tore up the boards with 16 rebounds.
On Saturday, GFA will attempt to add to their New England Championship tourney bid resume by traveling to play NEPSAC divisional foe, Hyde School. |

Dragons Win in Dobbs Ferry The Boys Varsity Basketball team continued their assault up the FAA and NEPSAC rankings, stretching their win streak to six games with a 68-61 victory over The Masters School. Every GFA player seemed rise to the occasion and dismantled a variety of defensive schemes employed by Masters.
Sean Obi did nothing to dim his reputation as one of the brightest rebounders in the nation, pulling down 26 in the game. He also broke his own school record with seven blocked shots in a single game. Brien Comey pulled down 13 boards, Zach Baines hauled in 10, and Patrick Ryan added to the GFA dominance with seven.
GFA's ball movement was outstanding. Matt Tate loaded his teammates with another generous outing of eight assists. Tremont Waters came off of the bench to lead all Dragon scorers with 16 points. Ryan and Obi scored 14 a piece. Hunter Eggers and Kam Mickens also had some pretty shots.
On Saturday, the team will travel to New Haven to face-off against Hopkins. Game time is set for 3pm. |

Dragons Win 7th Straight Game On Saturday, the Dragons accomplished something that no other GFA boys varsity basketball team had ever done. They went to into Hopkins’ hostile gym and emerged with a victory. The exciting 60-54 come-from-behind win was the team’s seventh in a row.
The Hopkins’ full court press and match-up zone combined to prevent GFA from getting any rhythm in the early going. The Dragons trailed by as many as nine points in the first half. Despite trailing the entire game, the Dragons kept their composure, and finally took control of the game in the final three minutes.
Sean Obi scored 24, rebounded 23 and assisted on five of his teammates’ scores. Tremont Waters (six assists, 11 points), Matt Tate (five assists), Hunter Eggers (two assists, seven points), and Patrick Ryan (three assists, eight points, seven rebounds), all kept the ball moving well and eventually solved the Hilltoppers’ defensive schemes.
Brien Comey (11 rebounds, six points) and Zach Baines (six rebounds) joined Obi and Ryan in earning the Dragons’ extra possessions off of the glass. Tate (3), Waters (3), Eggers (2) and Obi’s (2) multiple steals had the same effect.
On Monday, the Dragons will match up against The Masters School for a 5pm start.

8 In a Row for the Dragons The Boys Varsity Basketball team tied the school's consecutive wins record with a 63-61 nail-biter over The Masters School. Pat Ryan had a huge game, playing every minute in the game and blocking the possible Masters' game winner at the buzzer. Ryan and Sean Obi both recorded double-doubles. Obi scored 21 points, and rebounded another massive number of 24. It was Obi's 36th consecutive double-double.
Will Pavlis and Kam Mickens provided key minutes in the place of starter, Hunter Eggers. Tremont Waters stepped into the starter's role and handled the Crusaders pressure very well. Matt Tate tore it up by adding ten assists into the Dragons' offense. Brien Comey also scored and rebounded well. Zach Baines provided a great emotional lift. He rejected a sure Master's break-away score with a hustling and athletic shot block.
On Wednesday, one the biggest games in Coyle Gym history will take place. FAA #2 and New England #3 ranked GFA will host FAA #1 and New England #1 ranked Hamden Hall. Hamden Hall has every player back from last year's FAA and New England Championship team. |

He went into Stamford and broke the school's single game record by hitting six three pointers, scoring 26 points. Matt Tate made sure that Eggers and the other hot hands got open looks, dishing out 11 assists. Sean Obi had 11 points, and 15 rebounds. Brien Comey had eight points and seven rebounds. Pat Ryan had five assists and seven points. Van Barnet, Wills Rooney, Will Pavlis and Zach Baines also all contributed to continuing the team's 11 game win streak. The win set a school record for both total wins at 14, and league wins at 11.
On Wednesday, the team, currently ranked #3 in New England will leave school early and travel to Woodstock, CT to face #2 Hyde School. New England Championship tournament home game seedings will be riding on that outcome. |

For the second Wednesday in a row, the Boys Varsity Basketball team put up a monster win. Last week, they took down NEPSAC #1 ranked Hamden Hall. This week the traveled to Hyde School in Woodstock, CT and beat #2, 56-53.
The Hyde School’s high ranking was justified. Their stacked starting line-up included players from New York, Virginia, Massachusetts, Rhode Island and Nigeria, but it was GFA's starting five that took home the 'W'.
Obi scored 15 and added 21 rebounds to his nation’s leading average. Hunter Eggers scored 15 points to help fuel a 17 point early second half lead, but then went to the bench with a reinjured foot. Hyde took advantage of Eggers’ absence and turned the game momentum completely around. With 11 seconds left in the game Hyde had a chance to take a one point lead, but they missed a contested dunk. That forced them to foul Matt Tate. Tate’s pressure free throw practice routines paid off, sinking both ends of a one and one, guaranteeing GFA at least a tie. That left Hyde a time out and one last chance. Tate fought through two screens to chase and challenge Hyde’s best long ball shooter, and he got the job done.
Pat Ryan was heroic. He came back to school on Wednesday, after fighting a flu bug. Coach Scott didn’t even think twice about giving Ryan his normal job of guarding the other team’s best, college-bound scorer. Ryan did, what he always does, held that player below his season’s scoring averages.
Brien Comey, Tremont Waters and Zach Baines also made big contributions in this game of New England elites. Comey had the best shot block of the season, stuffing one of Hyde’s high flyers out of the sky and right down to the court floor.
On Friday, Comey and fellow seniors Will Pavlis and Wills Rooney will be honored in the pre-game for the St. Luke's game. The student body theme will be to wear “Red out” attire and honor this truly special “Year of the Dragon”. Game time is set for 6:00pm. |

The Year of the Dragon continues be a special one for the GFA Dragons. In front of a packed, red-clad Coyle Gym crowd, they defeated FAA foe St Lukes 69-54 for their 13th consecutive win. The win sets the school’s all time mark in both total wins (16-3) and FAA conference wins (11-3). The occasion was extra special in that the team celebrated its trio of seniors, Brien Comey, Will Pavlis and Will Rooney on Senior Night. All three played great ball with Comey leading the way with 20 points and 12 rebounds.
Sean Obi came alive in the second half, putting up an 18 and 18 night. Matt Tate led his teammates in popularity, handing out 9 assists. Van Barnet, Pat Ryan, Zach Baines and Kam Mickens all came off of the bench and made strong contributions. Tremont Waters added two of his signature long bomb three pointers.
The Dragons historic win streak faces a formable challenge on Tuesday, when they host a highly ranked, New England Class A team, Christian Heritage. |

Sean Obi was amazing! As in 37 points, 20 rebounds, 5 assists and 5 blocked shots amazing! The varsity boys center led the Dragons to their 14th consecutive win with a 70-64 victory over Christian Heritage.
The Dragon defense was, once again, very formidable. Pat Ryan put the lock-down on CHHS’ primary scorer, Bryan Jones. Jones is ranked #3 in the state at 22.6 ppg. Ryan held him to only three baskets. Hunter Eggers, Matt Tate, Will Pavlis bumped and muscled the other CHHS ball handlers into the teeth of GFA’s shot blockers, Obi, Brien Comey and Zach Baines.
Tate kept his ranking as #3 assist maker in New England, by dishing out seven. Obi’s 37 points tied his own single game record that he set last year. His 20 rebounds keeps him ranked #1 in the nation in that stat category, with a 20.6 rpg average.
The Dragon’s host their final regular season game on Friday at 6pm against Kingswood-Oxford of West Hartford. |

Westport Patch http://stamford.patch.com/articles/gfa-falls-to-hyde-59-43-in-nepsac-tourney An ultra successful season for the Greens Farms Academy boys basketball team ended Thursday as the Dragons suffered a 59-43 loss to Hyde School in the quarterfinals of the NEPSAC Class C tournament. Greenwich's Hunter Eggers scored 15 points for GFA, which concluded the season at 18-5. Hyde improved to 15-8 and will face either Hamden Hall or the Wheeler School (R.I) in the semifinals on Friday. That game, also scheduled for Wednesday, was postponed because of inclement weather during the comment from Rhode Island.
"We can’t play with a team that is that athletic after a week-long layoff," said GFA coach Doug Scott, whose team had won a school-record 15 straight games before getting upset by the King School 64-62 in the FAA playoffs last week. "We needed to be game-speed sharp, not practice-speed dull."
Greenwich's Sean Obi added 11 points and 16 rebounds for GFA, but Scott felt the Dragons were hurt by too many empty possessions. Hyde led 27-18 at the half.
"The ball seemed like a greased pig with all of the fumbled catches, missed high-percentage shots and turnovers," he said. "All of those empty possessions just fueled their running game."
A boarding school located in Woodstock with no Connecticut players, Hyde avenged a 56-53 loss to GFA on Feb. 8. Robert Lewis scored 21 points and Christian Ejiga added 14 for Hyde.
"We were in a sharp midseason groove when we beat them three weeks ago," Scott added. "Today, we just stepped all over ourselves against their excellent pressure.”
UConn star Andre Drummond sat on the GFA bench during the game, but he didn't bring the Dragons much luck.
"I should have subbed him in," Scott joked. "I'm firing Andre Drummond as our good luck charm." | |
