The Girls Varsity Volleyball Team dropped a tough 3-0 match to a very good Convent of the Sacred Heart Team to start the season. The Dragons were certainly not over-matched as the set scores indicate (25-27 / 18-25 / 23-25), the match was extremely close with the lead constantly switching sides. "The GFA backline defense led by Brooke Cirillo and Lucy Hoffman was as strong and scrappy as I have seen it, certainly this early in the season," noted Head Coach Paul Groves. "Our frontline attack let by hitters Kiera Wood and Sarah Young was consistent and well balanced." Senior setter Sarah MacDonell had an outstanding game with 18 assists and demonstrated great leadership on the floor. When asked about the over all tone of the game, Coach Groves said he feels, "strongly that this match was a positive motivator for the team, despite the loss because we played well and still have young players with unlimited potential." The Dragons will now travel to face Marianapolis Prep on Saturday, September 17th. |

GFA relied on a much stronger service attack today which resulted in 18 aces, led by Sarah Young with 10 and Brooke Cirillo with 8. Statistically it wasn't a big day but the Dragons were much more cohesive and much quicker to the ball then the previous match. Kiera Wood led the team with 5 kills and Sarah MacDonell had 7assists. The Girls Varsity Volleyball Team dropped a 0-3 decision to a very good KING team on Saturday. The match ultimately got away from the Dragons but not before GFA proved to be up to the task at the net and in rallies. The achilles heel for GFA in this match was their service errors which gave away points and reduced our own attack. At the net GFA proved they had the ability to put the ball away led by Sarah Young with 7 kills and Laura Reul with 5, the team just needed more attempts. Defensively at the net GFA was impressive against the strong hitting attack of KING collecting 13 blocks, led by Ruel with 7 blocks who enjoyed her best game of the season. Setter Sarah MacDonell who has been steady all season had another strong performance adding 14 assists and making great decisions. The loss brings GFA’s record to 5-4 will get right back into it when face The Wooster School on the road on Tuesday. |

The Girls Varsity Volleyball Team came up victorious Friday with a hard fought 3-1 win over Westwood’s Christian Academy. The Dragons lost the first set by a score of 23-25, came back strong in the second 25-15 followed by another nail biter 25-23 then finishing strong 25-17. It was a very good non-conference win for GFA, Westwood’s had a strong service game and attacked from the outside and back-row, plus showed a solid back-row defense. GFA finding themselves down after the first game were forced to make changes, adjust their play, and intensify their efforts which helped pave the way for winning the next three games. Providing a spark offensively was freshman lead server Claire Comey who earned 16 service points, including 8 aces and Sarah Young who continues her hot serving, hitting two game winners and collecting 3 aces. The Dragons also took over at the net with Kiera Wood, Sarah Young, Claire Comey and Laura Reul combining for 30 kills and 16 blocks. The team’s back-row defense also kick into high gear after the first game with Rachel Scwimmer, Lucy Hoffman, Brooke Cirillo and Wood picked up 27digs, turning back a strong attack. Setters Sarah MacDonell and Allie Anderson combined for 20 assists but also make great decisions and controlled the pace of the game. The Dragons are now 10-5 and will play their final league match when they host NYSD on Tuesday. |

The Girls Varsity Volleyball Team closed out their regular season with an impressive (3-0) win on the road at Harvey. The Dragons took control of the match early and with powerful serving, aggressive net play and great defensive communication. The team was led by senior setter Sarah MacDonell had a huge day with (20assists), (9kills) and (5aces). The GFA attack was in full swing Friday, hitting a season high (40kills) with sophomore Laura Reul pounding out (12kills), followed by Sarah Young (8kills), Kiera Wood (6kills) and Claire Comey (5kills). The team serving has also peaked as we hit for (21aces), also a season high. It was a very balance attack with Brooke Cirillo and Claire Comey hitting (7aces) apiece with Kira Wood chipping in another (4aces). A great deal of credit for our offensive success needs to go our back-row defense led by Rachel Schwimmer, Brooke Cirillo and Annie Flecha-Hirsch whose clean passing and communication provided endless opportunities for the Dragons to put up the numbers offensively that we did. GFA ends the regular season with an outstanding record that stands at (13-5) that included a great run to finish the season winning seven of their last eight contests. The Dragons will be in action on Monday in the FAA Tournament and should go into the New England “Class C” Tournament ranked (>) after wins over Christian Heritage and Harvey this week. Congratulations also to Sarah MacDonell, Kiera Wood and Lucy Hoffman who were selected New England “All-Stars” and will participate in the “All-Star” game on Sunday Nov. 6th hosted by GFA. |

The Girls Varsity Volleyball found themselves on the on the road at Masters Monday in the quarter's of the FAA Tournament and came home victorious. The Dragons upset Masters with a hard fought 3-1 victory. The match started off rocky with GFA's nerves reacting to the tournament atmosphere and dropped the first set. In the second set GFA settled down and found a rhythm winning convincingly. Then in the last two sets it was tournament volleyball, both teams played great but GFA prevailed in both sets that came right down to wire (26-24 / 25-21). The Dragons again relied on their aggressive net attacks led by Kiera Wood who pounded out 12 kills with great support from Sarah Young, Laura Reul and Sarah MacDonell who combined for 16 kills; MacDonell also put up 18 assists. The Dragons defense was also instrumental in the victory as they turned back a strong hitting attack led by Lucy Hoffman and Rachel Swimmer each with 10 digs, with Brooke Cirillo and Sarah Young picking another 13 digs combined. The team effort didn't stop there because late in the forth set, coming off the bench were Mickaela Fouad and Annie Flecha-Hirsch giving the team a much needed serving boost that help turn the game GFA's way. The win earns the 14-5 Dragons a trip to the semi-finals which will take place on Wednesday on the road, when they face the #1 seed Greenwich Academy. |

The Girls Varsity Volleyball Team defeated top seeded Greenwich Academy (3-0) on the road in the semi-finals of the F.A.A. Tournament. The win sends the Dragons on the road and into the finals on Friday when they face Convent of the Sacred Heart. GFA without question came into the game prepared and motivated to match the power and experience of a very good GA squad. The last encounter between the teams was not a good one for GFA, losing (0-3) but the Dragons used that experience for motivation. From the beginning of the match GFA was the aggressor taking the first game (25-14), then displayed toughness / perseverance winning the next two sets (27-25) and (26-25). The dragons had great individual performances at GA but it took a total team effort to pull off the upset. Setter Sarah MacDonell was outstanding running the offense brilliantly and contributing (17assists), (7kills) (3blocks). The GFA front-line players took over the net again totaling (26kills) and (14blocks). Sarah Young also had a great day with (9kills) (7digs) and (3blocks). Hitters Kiera Wood, Claire Comey and Laura Reul added (12kills) and (8blocks) helping to sustain a strong and consistent attack. The back-line defense was also up to the task neutralizing the hard attack of GA with (41digs) led by junior Rachel Schwimmer (15digs), followed by Lucy Hoffman, Kiera Wood and Brooke Cirillo who added a combined (20digs). The girls have been building their season with teamwork, extra effort and hope that they are able find one more big effort on Friday back down in Greenwich. |
