GFA Takes Down The Wooster School in Opening Match
GFA christened the school's new state of the art turf field as they took down WNEPSSA opponent, The Wooster School, 3-1 in the teams opening match of the season. The Lady Dragons came out of the gates firing shots at a very strong Wooster goalie, registering twenty-one shots alone in the first half. With two minutes left to play in the half, junior midfielder, Caroline Vanacore, finally found the back of the net off a pass from fellow junior Phebe Wong, giving GFA a 1-0 lead at the end of the period.
GFA was hungry for more as they entered the second half. In the 43rd minute of the match, senior captain Emily Caldwell tapped a ball back to Wong at the top of the 18-yard box, allowing Wong to shoot one pass the Wooster goalie. Just four minutes later, junior Blair Pelley found Vanacore inside the box, where Vanacore took a touch and then tallied her second goal of the season, giving GFA a 3-0 lead. Senior captains Kate Tomlinson and Sam Brown led the defense, making it incredibly hard for Wooster to see any real opportunities for a score. It was not until the 75th minute that a Wooster player scored on a near perfect shot from the right side of the field.
Sophomore goalie Caroline Kruk and junior goalie Meghan Donovan both saw time in goal today, putting up a strong effort in net. Junior Meighan Grady, sophomore Rachel Cohen and freshmen Olivia Lennon and Campbell Goldsmith all played extremely tough on the field, setting their teammates and themselves up for numerous scoring opportunities.
The Lady Dragons look to make it 2-0 as they take on Ethel Walker in another home match tomorrow, September 17th, at 1:00. |

Wong Leads GFA to Victory
Coming in to the second game of the season, junior Phebe Wong, along with her teammates, were hungry for victory. Wong completed her first hat trick of the season with only twelve minutes expired from the clock. Wong registered her first goal of the game off a pass from senior captain Sam Brown, firing the ball past the Ethel Walker keeper. Just three minutes later, senior captain Kate Tomlinson dribbled through the Ethel Walker offense and fed a ball to Wong, allowing Wong to score her second of the game. At the twelfth minute of the game, Wong took a corner from the left side of the field, shooting the ball right in to the goalie, where it then deflected in to the goal, giving GFA a quick 3-0 lead.
For the fourth goal of the game, junior Caroline Vanacore dribbled through the defense and sent a ball through the Ethel Walker defense to Wong, giving Wong a clear look at goal and a 4-0 lead. At the 25th minute, GFA was fouled at the 30-yard box, giving Wong an open look at the goal. Wong focused on net and sent the ball above the outreached hands of the opposing goalie, netting her and the Lady Dragons their fifth goal of the game.
Going in to halftime, GFA talked about the adjustments they planned to make and took those goals with them in to the next forty minutes. The Lady Dragons earned a corner kick from the left side which found senior Nora Flaherty. Flaherty shot the ball, but it deflected off an Ethel Walker player back out to the edge of the 18-yard box to the feet of Wong. Wong nailed a ball to the top right corner of the goal for a near perfect shot and a 6-0 lead with twenty-five left to play.
The seventh goal of the game was from Vanacore, as she received a ball from sophomore Hilary Shannon and shot the ball in to an empty corner of net. Shannon, only minutes later, got a through ball from sophomore Tia Carson and dribbled her way to goal, passing the ball past the Ethel Walker goalie and finishing the scoring off for an 8-0 victory.
Sophomores Georgie Garner and Cole Vanacore played great defense in the back and were backed up by sophomore goalie Caroline Kruk (1 save) and junior goalie Meghan Donovan. Junior Kiki Kauffman also played key minutes and provided a great spark for the Lady Dragons.
GFA will be back in action on Monday, September 19th, as they travel to FAA rival, Convent of the Sacred Heart. |

GFA Ties Convent of the Sacred Heart in League Play
Greens Farms Academy entered today's match-up on a 2-0 winning streak, looking to keep that streak alive against rival Convent of the Sacred Heart. In the first half of play, GFA controlled the ball for most of the period, testing the CSH goalie on a few occasions; however, neither team were able to find the back of the net early on.
Ninety seconds in to the second half, GFA was clearly sparked and was able to put one on the scoreboard first. This goal started in the back with senior captains Sam Brown and Kate Tomlinson. Brown passed the ball to Tomlinson, creating an overlap for herself. Tomlinson then found the feet of junior Phebe Wong, who made it past the CSH defenders and shot the ball in to an empty corner of the net, giving the Lady Dragons a 1-0 lead.
With just under three minutes to play, possession was changing rapidly between the two teams. CSH found a small crack in the GFA defense, sending a ball through to their forward, who ended up tying the score at 1-1. GFA got one last chance at goal with just seconds left, but were unable to score one more.
Sophomores Hilary Shannon and Tia Carson provided Wong with much support on the offensive front, while sophomore Cole Vanacore was a stopper on defense. Junior Caroline Vanacore shut down the strongest player on CSH for much of the game and controlled the middle of the field with help from freshman Olivia Lennon and sophomore Rachel Cohen. Sophomore goalie Caroline Kruk played another stellar game in goal, coming up with 6 saves.
GFA will be back in action on Wednesday, September 21st, as they take on Cheshire Academy at home at 3:30. |

GFA Shut Out by Hopkins:
Greens Farms Academy girls' soccer team traveled to Hopkins School today to compete in their third WNEPSSA league match of the season. Hopkins came out ready to play and had payback on their minds from last year's loss to GFA. The speedy midfielders of the Hopkins offense played through balls and give-and-gos with each other, leading to a total of four goals and a 4-0 lead in the first half.
After the first forty minutes were complete, the GFA Lady Dragons re-grouped and came back out with a few adjustments to their offensive game. These adjustments led to additional shots for Greens Farms, but the back of the net was never found. Junior forward Phebe Wong, junior midfielder Caroline Vanacore, and senior captain Nora Flaherty all played strong minutes throughout the game, as they fought against Hopkins and looked to get the ball up field. Senior captains Sam Brown and Kate Tomlinson, along with junior Blair Pelle, stepped up in the second half and made many stops against a feisty Hopkins offense. Sophomore goalie Caroline Kruk (2 saves) played tough in goal in the first half, while junior goalkeeper Meghan Donovan (4 saves) gave up only one goal in the second period, off a very nice shot from a Hopkins midfielder, finishing the game at 5-0.
GFA will look to bounce back from this loss as they take on FAA opponent, Hamden Hall, at home on Friday September 30th at 4:30. |

GFA Earns 2-2 Tie with Hamden Hall
Entering in to today's game, GFA was hungry to play after losing the last two matches. The Lady Dragons matched up with FAA opponent, Hamden Hall, and fought until the last minutes, leaving the match with a 2-2 tie on the scoreboard. The Hornets struck first as they scored in the opening minutes from the right side of the field on a shot that sailed in to the top corner of net. Although Hamden Hall got one up there early, the Lady Dragons were not going to give up. For the remaining thirty-five minutes of the half, GFA pressured the Hamden Hall defense, leaving both teams with three shots at the end of forty.
The Lady Dragons came in to the second half with a spark in their eyes. Just minutes in to the last forty, GFA tied the game. Junior midfileder, Meighan Grady, took the ball up the right sideline and crossed it in to the box, finding junior teammate Caroline Vanacore. Vanacore struck the ball past a diving Hamden Hall goalie and tied the game at 1. Just minutes later, Vanacore wanted more. She dribbled through the Hamden Hall defense and sent a ball up to junior Phebe Wong. Wong took just a few touches and placed the ball in to an open corner of net, giving the Lady Dragons a 2-1 lead. Hamden Hall didn't stop pushing though and earned a corner at the fifty-five minute mark. The ball found the head of a Hamden Hall player and tied the game at its final score of 2-2.
Senior captains Sam Brown and Kate Tomlinson, along with junior Blair Pelley and sophomore Cole Vanacore, played tremendous defense in the back, holding Hamden Hall to just seven shots on net. Sophomore goalie, Caroline Kruk, played the full eighty minutes and came up with three saves in net. GFA has a busy week coming up, as they start play with Holy Child on Monday October 3rd at 4:30 on their home field. |

GFA Takes Down FAA Opponent Holy Child
Starting a three game week, the Greens Farms Academy Girls' Soccer Team came out hungry against their first opponent Holy Child. It was only thirteen seconds in to the opening play before the Lady Dragons put one in. The whistle blew to start the game when junior Phebe Wong sent the ball up to freshman Campbell Goldsmith who crossed the ball back in to the box, finding Wong for a quick flick over the goalie's head and a 1-0 lead. From there, GFA continued to push the ball up field, gaining chances on net with through balls. It was junior Kiki Kauffman's ball that found it's way through the Holy Child defense and to the feet of sophomore Hilary Shannon who took a few touches on goal and placed the ball with her left foot past the Holy Child keeper, making it 2-0 in favor of GFA. With just a minute left to go in the first period, junior Meighan Grady saw some open field, taking a few dribbles before sending the ball up to Wong who took a few more touches and scored in an open corner of goal for a 3-0 halftime lead.
Entering the second half, the Lady Dragons continued to push against Holy Child. Although Holy Child did gain a few chances on net, the determined GFA defense, composed of senior captains Kate Tomlinson and Sam Brown, junior Blair Pelle and sophomores Cole Vanacore and Georgie Garner, along with sophomore keeper Caroline Kruk (4 saves) and junior keeper Meghan Donovan (5 saves), did not allow their opponent to get one up on the scoreboard. With the solid backs for GFA clearing the ball for the offense, Greens Farms was able to put one more goal in before the end of the match. Shannon got a break away where she dribbled up the field and, while keeping great composure, shot the ball past the Holy Child keeper, taking the game to its final 4-0 tally.
GFA will take this win, along with many of the positive plays completed, and enter in to their second match of the week against WNEPSSA opponent, The Westover School, on Wednesday October 5th at 3:45 at home. |

GFA Makes It Two in a Row
Greens Farms Academy entered in to today's match facing WNEPSSA opponent, The Westover School. Both teams came out strong, but Westover put one on the board first off a strong throw in and consequent flick of the ball. The next twenty minutes resulted in many shots on goal from GFA, but the back of the net was not found until five minutes left in the half. Westover had a short punt come out of the box when senior captain, Nora Flaherty, stepped to the ball and found fellow senior captain, Emily Caldwell, in her first game back from injury, for a beautiful shot, as she turned her body and hit the top corner. This tied the game and brought both teams to halftime.
At the beginning of the second period, it was GFA who came out strong and put one in before ninety seconds could elapse. Junior Blair Pelle took a corner from the right side of the field and the ball ricocheted off the goalie, giving Greens Farms a 2-1 lead. Just minutes later, sophomore Hilary Shannon took the ball through the defense of Westover and found junior Phebe Wong. Wong took a more touches towards goal and shot the ball past a diving Westover goalie, making the score 3-1 in favor of GFA.
Although the Lady Dragons gave themselves a two goal lead with about twenty-five minutes left in the half, Westover still had some life left in them. The Wildcats took a corner from the right side of the field and found their way to goal through some chaos in the box. With that goal scored, GFA became hungry again, as Wong found junior midfielder, Caroline Vanacore, at the top of the box. Vanacore took one touch on the ball and passed the ball in to the left corner of goal for a 4-2 lead. Westover then came back for their last goal on a shot from outside the 18-yard box that soared over the head of GFA. At 4-3 and with 3:30 left to play in the game, GFA had one more goal left in them, as they earned a direct kick from the forty yard line. Caldwell took this kick and found the foot of Vanacore who notched her second goal of game and the final tally of 5-3.
Sophomore Caroline Kruk played the first forty minutes behind net and made three saves until junior Meghan Donovan took over the last forty and earned three saves of her own. These two goalies backed up Pelle, senior captains Kate Tomlinson and Sam Brown, and sophomores Georgie Gardner and Cole Vanacore in the back. Juniors Caroline Vanacore, Meighan Grady and Kiki Kauffman, along with sophomore Rachel Cohen and freshman Olivia Lennon, all held down the middle of the field and played many great balls up to the offense.

GFA Ties Brewster Academy
Greens Farms Academy took on WNEPSSA opponent, Brewster Academy, today on their home turf. Both teams played a possession game for most of the first half, finding the feet of their teammates, but not registering too many shots; however, both teams were able to put one in the back of the net before the horn sounded after forty. It was Brewster Academy who struck first, as a player took the ball up the left side of the field and crossed it in to the box where a BA player touched it in. Just minutes later, GFA netted the game at 1, as junior forward Phebe Wong took the ball up the right side of the field and nailed a shot in the top left corner from outside of the 18-yard box. This ended the half and the scoring.
Throughout the second half, both teams were able to gain some nice opportunities on net, but neither registered another goal. Juniors Caroline Vanacore and Kiki Kauffman manned the middle of the field with fellow junior Meighan Grady, sophomore Rachel Cohen and freshmen Olivia Lennon and Campbell Goldsmith. Senior captains Kate Brown and Sam Brown played tremendous defense along with junior Blair Pelley and sophomore Caroline Kruk backing them up in goal. |

Dragons Tie Suffield on the Road
On a wet and soggy field the Lady Dragons tied Suffield Academy 1-1 on Wednesday. The Lady Dragons had a few open net opportunities the first half, but just missed the goal by inches. The second half began with GFA not backing down and heading to goal many times, but just could not connect, as Suffield also played a offside's trap. With 20 minutes left in the game, Suffield came down with the ball and crossed the ball in front of the GFA gaol, and found a hole at the far post where a Suffield player put in for a 1-0 lead. Making the long drive north, the Lady Dragons were not going to be denied; a handful of questionable tackles only served to solidify their resolve. With two minutes left in the game Junior Phoebe Wong (Darien) had a break away, was heading to the goal, and was taken out by a Suffield Player and a yellow card was given. The ball was placed outside the 18 and senior captain Emily Caldwell (Fairfield) took the direct kick, and placed the ball beautifully in the far top corner of the goal. Tying the game 1-1. With Two minutes left, GFA had another Direct kick on the top of the box, but that one was placed over the goal. The game ended 1-1, with Sophomore Caroline Kruk 8 saves, and GFA 10 shots on goal. GFA will be back in action on Saturday on when they travel to Stamford for King's homecoming. Game time is set for 12:15pm. |

GFA entered in to today's game against rival King on the opponent's Homecoming day. The first twenty minutes of the match was played without much action from either side. As each team tried to maintain possession of the ball, it was Greens Farms Academy that finally took control. After working the ball forward from the back of the field, GFA earned their first corner kick of the day, which was taken by junior Blair Pelley. She sent the ball to the far end of the box where freshman Olivia Lennon used her head to send one past a diving King goalie, making it a 1-0 lead. Just one minute later, junior Caroline Vanacore dribbled through the King midfield and sent a through ball to fellow junior Phebe Wong who took only a few touches on the ball before notching another goal for GFA with a strong shot to the opposite corner. This ended the scoring for the period and brought the game to a 2-0 halftime in favor of GFA.
The next half played much of the same way, with both teams working to get the ball up field and find open looks on net. Neither team got a good look at goal until the seventeen minute mark. King earned a direct kick from the forty-yard line, which found the foot of another King player and eventually, the back of the net. This took the game to 2-1 and a momentum pick-up for both teams. GFA sent many through balls to its forwards, but were unable to finish on goal. It was not until there was only a minute left GFA earned a free look on net with a penalty kick. Senior captain, Emily Caldwell, took this shot with much composure and scored the Lady Dragons their third goal of the game and took the match to its final 3-1 score.
Senior captains Kate Tomlinson and Sam Brown led the defense and were backed up by sophomore goalkeeper, Caroline Kruk (4 saves). Greens Farms will take on St. Lukes at home on Tuesday October 18th in their next game. |

GFA Takes Down Undefeated St. Luke's
Greens Farms Academy came in to today's game knowing what they had to do to take on previously undefeated FAA and WNEPSSA rival, St. Luke's. They needed to come out ready to play and leave it all on the field, and that is exactly what they did. The Lady Dragons came out with a fire behind them. While neither team got many opportunities at goal early on, it was GFA that continued to press, finding the open players and eventual looks on net. At the eighteen minute mark, junior Meighan Grady received a ball from the opposite side of the field. Grady took a strong touch on the ball, crossing it in front of the net where sophomore teammate, Tia Carson, flicked it in goal for a 1-0 lead. While the Lady Dragons did earn the lead, it was only for a brief moment, as the Storm continued to push and eventually found their forward for a fast-break goal and tied game going in to halftime.
The next thirty-five minutes went with both teams looking for an offensive break, but neither were able to find it. The GFA defense, which consisted of its regular stoppers - senior captains Sam Brown and Kate Tomlinson, junior Blair Pelley and sophomore Georgie Garner - was joined late in the first half by senior captain Emily Caldwell. Caldwell shut down St. Luke's best player, eliminating many of the opportunities they saw early on. With Caldwell and the rest of the defense doing their part, Pelley was able to move up to the midfield where she eventually received a ball from sophomore Rachel Cohen. Pelley took a few touches on the ball and then sent it in to the corner of goal past a diving St. Luke's goalie. With this goal being scored at the five minute mark, it was the final dagger for St. Luke's. This goal finished the game at 2-1, leaving GFA on top and enjoying the well-deserved rewards from their hard work.

GFA Falls to Greenwich Academy
Greens Farms Academy girls' soccer entered in to today's match against Greenwich Academy as the only remaining unbeaten team in the FAA; however, GA got the better of GFA today in a 2-0 loss. The Gators came out hungry early and scored their first goal in the 4th minute of the match. GA earned a direct kick from right outside the eighteen-yard box, which was then headed in to the open corner of net for a quick 1-0 lead. Neither team gained many additional opportunities during this period with both teams playing strong defense. Senior captain Kate Tomlinson led the way on the defensive end, stepping in the paths of the Gators and running down numerous balls.
Throughout the next forty minutes, the Lady Dragons stepped up their game with sophomore Hilary Shannon taking a very strong shot on net, but the GA keep came up with a strong save, maintaining her team's 1-0 lead. At the fifteen minute mark, Greenwich Academy was awarded a corner kick, which resulted in their second goal for a 2-0 lead. Junior Caroline Vanacore continued to press for GFA and fight for through balls and shots on net, but GFA was not able to get on the board in this match-up.

GFA Wins on Homecoming
In a battle fought to the very end, the Lady Dragons came out victorious and captured their second win off King in as many games. While the Vikings scored first off a shot to the top of the goal, Greens Farms Academy never gave up and never stopped fighting. Going in to half time with a 1-0 deficit, GFA came out hungry in the second period. Junior Phebe Wong started the run in the first goal, as she received the ball and then played it to freshman Campbell Goldsmith. Goldsmith took just two touches on ball and sent the ball in to the top opposite corner of net with a beautiful shot, earning GFA a 1-1 tie. Both teams continued on in the game, fighting for every loose ball and trying to find their way to goal; however, it was only Greens Farms who would score again in this duel. The Lady Dragons earned a corner kick from the left side where senior captain Emily Caldwell found the head of junior Caroline Vanacore for a perfect goal and a perfect way to end the game. Just three more minutes expired from the clock after that and the game finished with a 2-1 tally in favor of the home team.
In addition to the fight Wong, Caldwell, Goldsmith and Vanacore put up throughout this match, senior captains Kate Tomlinson, Sam Brown and Nora Flaherty, along with the entire rest of the team, laid their bodies out for today's win and earned every ounce of it. GFA will look to remain on this road as they take on FAA rival Rye Country Day School on Monday October 24th. |

GFA Takes Down Rye Country Day School:
Greens Farms Academy and Rye Country Day School both entered today's match-up as two of the top teams in the FAA; however, only one team was able to walk away the victor and that was Greens Farms. While both teams played solid soccer, it was GFA that controlled the ball for much of the game, registering nineteen shots on net. Coming out strong early proved to be the difference for GFA. The Lady Dragons pressured the RCDS defense constantly for the first twelve minutes and it was at that thirteenth minute of the game when the pressure paid off. Senior captain Emily Caldwell took the ball up the left side of the field, crossing it in to the box where junior Phebe Wong sent the ball past a diving Rye goalie for the lone goal in the game. GFA forwards Tia Carson and Hilary Shannon provided additional depth and strength for the GFA offense, while juniors Caroline Vanacore, Meighan Grady and Kiki Kauffman, along with sophomore Rachel Cohen and freshman Olivia Lennon, held down the middle, as well as Rye's two best players.
For the next sixty-seven minutes, both teams pressed against the others defense. The GFA defense, consisting of senior captains Kate Tomlinson and Caldwell, junior Blair Pelley, sophomore Georgie Garner and freshmen Lennon and Campbell Goldsmith, stepped up to the challenge and allowed only eleven shots on goal, while sophomore keeper Caroline Kruk didn't let one get past her. While this game proved to be a challenge for the Lady Dragons, it also proved the strength of this team and their ability to win under pressure.
GFA will look to add to its winning streak as they travel to WNEPSSA opponent, The Canterbury School on Wednesday October 26th for a 4:15 start. |

GFA Downs Canterbury
Greens Farms Academy made the long trip up to WNEPSSA opponent The Canterbury School where they defeated the Saints 3-0. The first half proved to be uneventful with neither team connecting many passes or finding open looks at net; however, the second half was different for the Lady Dragons, as they ended the game with close to thirty shots and three balls in the back of the net.
The first goal of the game came at the 47th minute when senior captain Emily Caldwell sent the ball in to the box where it found sophomore Rachel Cohen and finally freshman Campbell Goldsmith, who put it in the back of the net. For the next seventeen minutes, GFA kept Canterbury on their heels, as they continued to press the ball forward, using their defense as a means to do so. At the 64th minute, sophomore Tia Carson received a ball from the back, which she played beautifully to junior Caroline Vanacore in the middle who then found junior Phebe Wong up top. Wong sent the ball past a diving Canterbury goalie and took the game to 2-0. Just four minutes later, Carson was scoring a goal of her own. Freshman Olivia Lennon played a through ball from the middle up the sideline where Carson took a touch and then placed it in the back of the net. This finished the scoring for the game and brought the match to its final 3-0 tally.
Sophomore Georgie Garner, junior Blair Pelley and senior captains Kate Tomlinson and Same Brown played the full 80 minutes of the game, defending their goal and only allowing one shot on net. Sophomore goalie Caroline Kruk, along with her defense, recorded their second shutout in a row and will look to do the same in their next match, as they travel to The Masters School on Saturday for a 12 PM kick-off. |

GFA Finishes Regular Season with Win Greens Farms took charge of their final regular FAA match with a 4-1 win over The Masters School. The Lady Dragons found the net early and never looked back. Junior Phebe Wong scored during the twelfth minute, as she received a ball from senior captain Emily Caldwell and took the ball up the right side of the field, nailing a shot to the top left corner. Just one minute later, sophomore Hilary Shannon knocked in a goal of her own. Wong crossed the ball in front of the goal when Shannon got the rebound and touched the ball in. This gave GFA a 2-0 lead, as well as a little breathing room; however, the Lady Dragons still weren't done for the half. With just five minutes left, GFA earned a corner kick, which was taken by junior Blair Pelley. Fellow junior Caroline Vanacore got a head on the ball and sent it past a diving Masters goalie for a 3-0 lead going in to halftime.
The Lady Dragons entered the second half with a continued intensity and desire to score. At the forty-eighth minute, sophomore Tia Carson took a shot on goal that was deflected by the Masters goalie. Freshman Olivia Lennon was there for the clean-up and fired a shot past the diving Masters goalie for the final goal scored by GFA.
GFA's defense was strong throughout the match, led by senior captains Kate Tomlinson and Sam Brown, as well as sophomore Caroline Kruk in goal. Sophomore Georgie Garner, along with Pelley and Caldwell, cleaned up the rest of the balls in the back, making it near impossible for Masters to get any solid looks at net. It was only after Masters was given a penalty kick at the fifty-second minute that the team was able to score, taking the game to its final 4-1 lead.
With this win, GFA finished second in the FAA and earned the number three seed in the conference tournament. The Lady Dragons will take on Convent of the Sacred Heart at home on Monday November 7th at 2:30 in the first round. |

GFA Loses in FAA Semi-Final Round:
The Lady Dragons were prepared for today's match against the Gators from Greenwich Academy; however, the team was not able to connect passes the way they intended and, therefore, were unable to find the back of the net. GA scored early in the first period off a through ball from their talented center midfielder and then again in the second off a direct kick from the side for the final 2-0 tally.
While Greenwich Academy was able to put goals up on the board, GFA controlled the ball for the majority of the second half. Senior captains Kate Tomlinson and Emily Caldwell left everything they had on the field, as they both played on the defensive end and also advanced forward throughout the game. Juniors Kiki Kauffman and Caroline Vanacore, along with freshman Olivia Lennon, contributed extremely valuable minutes, as they found their way to goal and also played solid defense for keepers Caroline Kruk and Meghan Donovan.
GFA will look to bounce back against WNEPSSA opponent Miss Porters in their senior day on Saturday November 11th at 1:00. |

GFA Takes Down Miss Porters for Senior Day In the final home match of the season, the Lady Dragons took down WNEPSSA opponent Miss Porters 3-1. The team started the scoring early as junior Caroline Vanacore sent a beautiful ball to senior captain Emily Caldwell on the left side of the field. After a few touches up the sideline, Caldwell sent the ball across field where junior Phebe Wong sent the ball past a diving goalie for a quick 1-0 lead. It was only a few minutes later when GFA found the back of the net again. This time, sophomore Rachel Cohen found Caldwell on the sideline where she again took the ball up the left side of the field. There was no matching the pure speed of Caldwell on this run, as she dribbled by all of her opponents and nailed a second goal for the Lady Dragons.
Although GFA earned a quick 2-0 lead, Miss Porters did not back down. They continued to pressure the defense and eventually found a hole where they sent a through ball for their lone goal of the game. After that score, the Lady Dragons were determined to put another one in net before half. Wong had the ball in the right corner of the field and sent it in to the box, finding freshman Campbell Goldsmith. Goldsmith flicked the ball in goal and gave GFA a 3-1 lead, completing the scoring for the game.
The final forty minutes proved to be a defensive dual, as both teams looked for openings, but were not able to find the back of net. Greens Farms' defense was led today, as well as all season, by senior captains Kate Tomlinson and Sam Brown. Junior Blair Pelley, freshman Olivia Lennon and sophomore Georgie Garner also all contributed strong minutes in the back, making numerous stops for the defense and backing up sophomore keeper Caroline Kruk. The team will count on their defense to continue to make stops and find their offense as they enter the WNEPSSA tournament on Wednesday. The Lady Dragons will travel to Wheeler on Wednesday for the first round of the tournament. |

GFA Wins in First Round of New Englands
It was the third time that the Greens Farms Academy girls' soccer team had traveled to The Wheeler School for a New England game; however, after losing to them twice in the past three years, the Lady Dragons had revenge on their minds and came out with a vengeance. Neither team was able to find the back of the net early on in the game, although both had their opportunities. GFA displayed its speed in the midfield with senior captain Emily Caldwell and junior Caroline Vanacore, as well as up top with junior Phebe Wong. The defense, with its normal stoppers of senior captains Kate Tomlinson, Sam Brown, junior Blair Pelley and Olivia Lennon, as well as Caldwell, who joined later in the half, turned away numerous balls from Wheeler, leaving them with only two shots on goal in the first forty minutes.
As the minutes ticked off the clock in the second half, it seemed as though both teams were hanging on for overtime; however, it took only one break away from a Wheeler player to completely turn the game around. The talented midfielder found herself in a one-on-one with Caldwell. While it seemed as though it was just the two of them in front of goal, another Wheeler player came in to sight and received a ball from her teammate, shooting it past a diving sophomore keeper, Caroline Kruk (5 saves). This goal gave Wheeler a 1-0 lead with only eight minutes left to play; it also lit a fire under Caldwell and the Lady Dragons, as they were not ready for their season to come to a close.
Over the next eight minutes, GFA advanced the ball and found their opportunities on net. While they didn't immediately score, they had Wheeler on their heels and all who were watching knew the game was far from over. At the 1:30 mark, Greens Farms earned a direct kick from the 45-yard line. While most players would try to flick that ball over the heads of the defense to find one of their teammates for a shot on goal, Caldwell, in addition to her teammates, knew she could make it from that far out and that's exactly what she did. She ripped a shot from the forty-five and found the back of the opposite corner of goal, netting the game at one and taking it to overtime.
Over the course of the next twenty minutes, both teams fought hard, but neither were able to put it away. This left the game in the hands of penalty kicks - shooter vs. goalie. Wheeler began the shootout with a goal and junior Kiki Kauffman matched it, leaving the score at one all. Then it was Kruk's time to shine, as she stopped the next Wheeler shot with a diving save. Tomlinson then nailed her shot to the top corner, giving GFA a 2-1 lead. The next three Wheeler players all made their shots, as did Vanacore and Wong for GFA, leaving the tally at 4-4 with one shot to go. It was Caldwell who again found herself in a position to win the game. After she took one deep breath, she fired the ball in the top corner of net, leaving the Wheeler goalie with no chance to save the ball and giving Greens Farms the 5-4 lead and 2-1 win for the match.
This game displayed the skill, depth, composure and heart of the Lady Dragons and it is these traits that they will bring with them in to the semi-final round against Brewster Acadedmy, who they tied earlier in the season. The game is set to be played on Saturday at a neutral site with time TBD. |

GFA Loses in Second Round of New England Tournament
Greens Farms entered in to the semi-final round of the New England Tournament today against Brewster Academy with solid passing and crossing from the midfield. Senior captains Emily Caldwell and Nora Flaherty, along with junior Phebe Wong, led the way on the offensive end. The defense was led by senior captains Kate Tomlinson and Sam Brown, backing up keeper Caroline Kruk, by sending balls out of the back and stopping many other balls from getting through.
Although GFA outshot BA 12-4, Brewster was able to register one goal in the first half when they crossed the ball and hit the near corner of net. From there, they were shut down offensively. GFA's best opportunity came in the second half as junior Blair Pelley sent a corner ball in to the box where junior Caroline Vanacore hit it past a diving BA goalie; however, the goal was called back due to a handball, leaving the game at its final tally of 1-0.
This game ends the season for GFA, but the Lady Dragons will be back next year and will continue to have high expectations. Thank you to the six GFA seniors - Kate Tomlinson, Sam Brown, Emily Caldwell, Nora Flaherty, Taylor Schendel and Hailey Durno. Without their leadership, none of the success that was seen this season would be possible. | |
