Boys Varsity opens season with 5-2 loss at Cheshire Academy.
GFA showed it's inexperience early in the game, falling behind 4-0 after 30 minutes of play. GFA created some excellent scoring chances during that time, but were denied by some very good goalkeeping. The boys began to turn the tide after junior Spencer Hartig (Riverside) scored a few minutes before halftime.
Down 4-1 coming out of the break, GFA seemed to have a bit more of the play and spent much of the second half pressuring Cheshire's defense. Hartig scored his second of the game with nine minutes left, and GFA went all out looking for more. With under three minutes left Cheshire scored on a breakaway against the run of play to ice the game.
Juniors Clay Garner (Greens Farms), and Ryan Eckert (Wilton), along with senior Seb deGoeijen (Norwalk) and sophomore John Lawrence (Southport) all played well defensively, as did juniors Anders Forfang (New Canaan) and Charles Salmans (Darien). Senior captain Harry Garland (Westport) helped spark the midfield along with sophomore Brendan Bieder (Southport), freshman Griffin Garner (Greens Faroms), and junior Munir Qaddourah (Trumbull).
GFA returns to action at 2:30 on saturday at Trinity Pawling. |

GFA Boys Soccer improves to 1-2 on the season with 7-0 victory over Chase Collegiate.
"The team worked hard during our first two losses and created many quality chances. It was nice to see them work hard, create, and finish the same type of chances today", said Coach Chris Mira. Sophomore Brendan Bieder (Southport), and juniors Spencer Hartig (Riverside) and Munir Qaddourah (Trumbull) were the reciepiants of some solid teamwork that led to their goals. Bieder had three in the first half while Hartig and Qaddourah had one each. Playing smart, tough defense was the key to keeping the pressure on Chase. Senior Seb deGoeijen (Norwalk), juniors Clay Garner (Greens Farms), Charlie Salmans (Darein), Anders Forfang (New Canaan), and Ryan Eckert (Wilton) along with sophomore John Lawrence (Southport) all played well in front of junior goalkeeper Ryan Friend (Darien) who registered 8 saves in his first shutout of the season. Senior Max Perron (New Canaan) scored in the second half as did Eckert on an assist from junior Jonah Singer (Norwalk)

Senior Seb deGoeijen (Norwalk), juniors Clay Garner (Greens Farms), Van Barnet(Ridgefield) and Ryan Eckert (Wilton) along with sophomore John Lawrence (Soutport) all gave a tough, smart, gritty effort throughout the entire game. After the break GFA took a 5-2 lead when Bieder scored his second and Hartig completed his hattrick. Junior Sean Obi (Greenwich) notched GFA's sixth goal with a great individual effort, and Qaddourah finished the scoring after getting taken down in the box for a penalty kick. Juniors Anders Forfand (New Canaan) and Charles Salmans (Darein) also played well in the middle of the field. GFA, now 3-3 on the season, will host New England champs South Kent on Saturday at 4PM. |

The boys soccer team lost a well played match vs the number one team in New England, South Kent, 4-0. South Kent was the dominate team throughout, but GFA played smart, tough defense looking to counter attack vs the speed of their opponents. Despite trailing 3-0 at the half, GFA was able to create a number of scoring chances, one of which was cleared off the goalline by a South Kent defender.
The second half saw the boys continue their smart, counterattacking style which resulted in even more scoring opportunities. Junior Spencer Hartig (Riverside) was stopped one-on-one with the goalie, and two John Lawrence (sophomore, Southport) corner kicks were tipped over the crossbar by the outstretched South Kent goalkeeper.
Junior goalkeeper Ryan Friend (Darien) made 10 saves behind a tough, gritty defense which included Lawrence, and juniors Clay Garner (Greens Farms), Van Barnet (Ridgefield), and senior Seb deGoeijen (Norwalk).
Junior midfielders Munir Qaddourah (Trumbull), Ryan Eckert (Wilton), Charlie Salmans (Darien), Anders Forfang (New Canaan), JT Becker (Westport), Jonah Singer (Norwalk), and sophomore Wyatt Cook (Westport), along with freshman Clay Garner (Greens Farms) all played well.

Boys soccer fights their way to a 1-1 tie vs FAA rival Hamden Hall GFA never seemed to get into any kind of rhythm throughout the game, while Hamden Hall played aggressive, disruptive defense in their quest to upend GFA. Junior Spencer Hartig (Riverside) scored an unassisted goal 20 minutes into the first half to give GFA the lead. That lead held up until 9 minutes into the second half when Hamden notched the equalizer. Both teams continued to press for the winner, trading shots and corners until the final whistle. Junior goalkeeper Ryan Friend (Darien) many several tough saves to preserve the tie. GFA, now 3-4-1 on the season will host FAA rival St Luke's on Tuesday. |
