Help GFA Honor Charlie Dietrich
DIEC1.JPG

After 25 years of instilling mathematical concepts into young minds and being a true master teacher, Charlie Dietrich has decided to lay down his graphing calculator and retire.

Mr. Dietrich is a beloved teacher and he'll be missed dearly.  We'll be putting together an album of remembrances to honor a man who has taught hundreds of students and has always upheld his own very high standards of intellectual rigor.  Please send us your tributes and memories of Mr. Dietrich to include in the book.  We will present the book to him at this year's Reunion on Saturday, May 22nd.

All pictures, memories and stories can be sent to Rachel D'Agostino at rdagostino@gfacademy.org.

Alumni Sports Success

GFA alum Marc Powers '09 is enjoying his freshman year playing #1 singles at Yale.

Powers was an accomplished athlete at Greens Farms Academy and played #1 singles for the Dragons since 8th grade. He received the David M. Perry Sportsmanship Award his senior year, which is given to a student who best exemplifies the high ideals of good sportsmanship as they pursue excellence in athletics.

Marc was ranked #1 in New Englands in his age group for seven straight years.

Oliver Van Zant '09 was named Athlete of the Week at Bowdoin College.  Oliver wasted no time beginning his collegiate career. As a starting pitcher, he has a 4-0 record this season. His ERA is 2.74 and his 32 strikeouts are second-highest in the NESCAC. Meanwhile, Bowdoin is off to its best start in program history. Its 15-5 record has earned a first-place ranking in a recent New England D-III poll.

Van Zant's victory over Trinity is his most notable achievement of the season thus far. Trinity has won the NESCAC Championship for the past two years, and claimed the D-III Championship in 2008. Nevertheless, Van Zant held the team to just one run and posted an impressive 11 strikeouts on approximately 130 pitches. As a result, Van Zant was named NESCAC Pitcher of the Week.

Java Jam 2010 was an incredible night of music. Six alumni returned to GFA with their college a cappella groups to sing to a packed house of parents, students, alumni and faculty. Funds raised for the evening went to the Faculty Enrichment Fund, which was established to support and encourage professional development among faculty. It was a truly memorable evening. Many thanks to all of those involved in making this event happen!

A cappella groups that performed:

Brown Higher Keys (Deepali Gupta '08)
Connecticut College Vox Cameli (Mark Warburg '09)
Northeastern Downbeats (Bernadette Jamison '06)
Princeton Tigertones (Will McCalpin '08)
Skidmore Accents (Anni Satinover '06)
U. of Rochester Midnight Ramblers (Alex Perry '06)
(cameo performances by GFA’s Beachside Express,
Harbor Blues, and Chamber Choir)

The Twiga Kilt Story
skirts3.jpg

While traveling in East Africa, the Leslie family discovered a women's cooperative in Uganda, making school uniforms for local schools. The family asked if the women would consider making kilts for GFA, setting into motion an unprecedented social enterprise. Using local cloth and materials from Uganda and Kenya, the co-op is comprised of mostly women, many who have lost their husbands to AIDS or political turmoil. The organization, School Outfitters Ltd, also employs young women who have had to drop out of school in order to earn money.

A dragon appears on the outside waistband of each kilt to represent GFA while a Twiga, Swahili for giraffe and the brand name for the women's line of uniforms, is on every inside label.

After receiving a sample kilt last summer, Head of School Janet Hartwell arranged for the GFA School Store to sell the kilts. A shipment of grey kilts has just arrived and an order for plaid kilts has been placed.

As You Like It

The Upper School Spring production As You Like It was performed this Saturday, April 24th on GFA's very own extraordinary front lawn. The terrace served as the setting and offered a beautiful and somehow perfect backdrop for this comedy set at court and the Forest of Arden.
