GFA Welcomes Students Back to School
Jazz band.JPG

As students arrived at GFA for the first day of school, they were welcomed by the Upper School Jazz Band, The Sound Waves.

The new year at GFA is off to a good, smooth start. The busy first week was highlighted by the all-school Opening Convocation.

Two Alumni Sport Successes this Summer

Two recent GFA graduates had great success in their respective sports this summer.

Owen Traynor '09
won the National title at the 2009 US Rowing Youth National Championships in the men's double sculls, clocking in at 7:07.93. His partner was Max Meyer-Bosse (Staples High School), and they were rowing for Westport's Saugatuck Rowing Club. This was Traynor's third trip to Nationals to compete in the Boys 2x. In 2007, he placed 13th out of 18 boats and in 2008 he placed 4th out of 13 boats. Coming back to win gold this year in a close race was particularly exciting for Traynor. He writes "we were slow off the start but had powered through the field and led by open water by the half-way (1000m) mark." Owen rows for the Brown University rowing team.

Marc Powers '09 won the mens (all ages) open singles title at the Yale Summer Championships. His victory earned him a spot in the men's singles qualifying draw for the Pilot Pen Tennis Championship in New Haven. Marc played in the Pilot Pen in the first qualifying round on Saturday, August 22nd. His competitor was ranked 24th in the world. Marc plays on the Men's Tennis Team at Yale.

Alum Christine Daley '01 and her younger sister volunteer abroad
Daley sisters.JPG

Christine Daley '01 and her younger sister Alexandra recently started a blog titled Two Traveling Sisters.  You can visit their site at: http://www.twotravelingsisters.blogspot.com/

In November the Daley sisters will be heading abroad, working with a non-profit organization called Families in Vietnam, that along with many other things, pays to keep orphaned children off the streets and in foster care.  Their hope is to raise some money before they go and every little bit helps. If 72 people donated just five dollars, a child will have foster care for a year!

You can donate by going to: http://www.giveforward.org/FIVFosterCare/.
