Coyle Scholar, Spring 2012
Our spring 2012 Coyle Visiting Scholar is Jonathan Haidt, a professor of social psychology at the University of Virginia. A TED speaker and author, his recent book, "The Righteous Mind: Why Good People are Divided by Politics and Religion," is sitting at # 6 on The New York Times Best Seller List. A previous book by Haidt is "The Happiness Hypothesis: Finding Modern Truth in Ancient Wisdom."

Professor Haidt will address students on Tuesday, May 1st, 2012 at GFA, and will give a public talk on Tuesday evening at 8pm at the school. Haidt was interviewed by Bill Moyers about his new book in February (click HERE for more), and was mentioned in a Nicholas Kristof op-ed piece in the New York Times on March 21.

In recent reviews of Haidt's book, Paul Bloom of Yale University called Haidt "one of the smartest and most creative psychologists alive, and his new book is a tour de force...." For more about the book, click here.

About the Program

James M. Coyle Endowed Visiting Scholars Program

This program, begun in 1996, brings to Greens Farms Academy at least twice each year inspiring, prominent individuals of scholarly and contemporary interest, public servants, academicians, people of letters, or other public figures who have made a sustained and lasting contribution to education defined in its broadest sense. Each visiting scholar is invited to spend the day at the School, attend classes, and work with our students. After a reception, the visiting scholar delivers a public lecture for the community-at-large.

James M. Coyle, served as Headmaster of Greens Farms Academy, for twenty-six years. A graduate of the Taft School, Mr. Coyle was awarded his B.A. cum laude in history from Yale University in 1956, after which he returned to Taft to teach history, English and mathematics. After service in the United States Army, Mr. Coyle served for 13 years on the faculty of the King School as a teacher of history, coach, Director of Admissions, College Counselor, and Acting Headmaster. He also earned his M.A. in history at Columbia University in 1966. In 1972 he was appointed headmaster of Greens Farms Academy. In 1998 Mr. Coyle retired and is now living in Tucson, Arizona.
