Lary Bloom |

Author and editor Lary Bloom visited with Middle School students. Bloom is a mentor to many successful writers and was willing to share his tips with the students. In English classes, he talked about the craft of writing--how to develop an eye for detail and an ear for revealing dialogue, how to capture conflict, to write what you know, but also to strike a universal chord, how to plant "the gun in the drawer," the principle of inevitability and how to write seductive beginnings, middles and endings. |

Neva Austrew |

Young Author and illustrator Neva Austrew has a unique illustrative style. Her handmade collaged papers, coupled with pen and ink detailing, give young readers beautiful visuals to accompany the story telling. Two weeks prior to her visit, Neva sent a video she made for GFA students to teach them how to prepare handmade papers for their books. While at GFA, Neva spent two days working with the Upper School graphic design students as they embarked upon the illustrative accompaniment to their hand written stories. Neva also visited the Lower School, having pre-prepared a background of an ocean for students studying marine animals in science. Neva worked with students to 'fill the ocean' with a variety of hand-made sea creatures. |
