Studio Art

Upper School Studio Art teacher Nancy McTague-Stock says studio art students enjoy the benefits of a classical education--learning the importance of observation, technique, concept development and critical thinking. Creating works of art in a diversity of media, students progress through the years, building on the technical and conceptual base from the year before. More advanced students work with three dimensional design and create work that is based on their own personal research and interests. The AP portfolio occurs in the senior year, as students prepare for university studies and careers in the arts.

Students leave this program able to engage in 'creative discourse', with an active vocabulary and understanding of how to make art, critique it and write about it. Reading and writing are important components done in a highly supportive environment.

Particular emphasis in the arts is on independent, intuitive teaching methods, as they relate to individual learning styles. Art students leave GFA with a higher sense of self esteem and a fine sense of accomplishment. The art room environment is a nuanced one--both rigorous and fun. The open classroom is well suited to daily conversation as students challenge themselves and each other. Students often comment on how they learn not only about art in the art room, but also life.

GFA students participate in a number of state wide collaborations. DRAW ON!, sponsored by the Aldrich Museum, is one of the many annual events held at GFA pertaining to Studio Art.  Click HERE to see what it's all about.

Recent student exhibitions include a cohesive one with found objects alongside professional artists at the Darien Nature Center." Click HERE to see what it's all about.
