Nick 1.jpg

Nick:  GFA '10, Brown University '14
Came to GFA: Kindergarten, making me a "lifer" at GFA
Sport: Tennis, though I really enjoy squash and platform tennis too
Favorite Subject: Physics. I've always been a strong math student and finally found my niche in physics. It's primarily based on learning equations and patterns and being able to apply them to real situations. This year I'm combining my interest in physics with the game of bowling in my Independent Study. Come spring, I will have engineered a device that bowls strikes and will use it to educate people on what the "ideal throw" looks like. Many of my classmates and I will be competing in the CT Science Fair this March.
Other Activity: Bowling Club. This is a club I started last year. Twenty to thirty of us go bowling every Friday night. We love to dress up in crazy clothes for "Blacklight Bowling", win fun prizes, and relieve the stress from the week through some friendly competition. I'm amazed at how popular it has become. I'm happy to see such a broad spectrum of students come together to socialize and just have fun.

OWEN.jpg

Owen  second grade
Been at GFA:  since kindergarten
Favorite subject:  Besides recess and gym?  Science
A word from his mom:  I love that there are two teachers in all the Lower School classrooms, and I love the family environment.  When you walk down the hallway, teachers, administrators and even other kids know who you are and who your child is.  The easy access to teachers and administration is a great help.  Owen loves the science program--that there's a rabbit in the classroom and that the kids get their boots on and go outside to the marsh.  I mean, this is an active kid."

Jake: class of '11, Junior Olympic skier
Came to GFA: kindergarten
Favorite subject:  This year it's physics. I have always been interested in mathematics, and physics teaches you how to apply all the mathematics you've learned to solve problems. I especially like the Physics of Motion class, an elective that goes in depth about the physical aspects of sports, such as baseball and race car driving.
Other activity: I enjoy working with the Horizons at GFA program on the weekends and during the summer. I used to go to camp when I was a kid and always wished I could be a counselor, but because of athletic commitments, I don't have time to live at a camp for the summer. I enjoy being around the kids, and Horizons is a great way for me to both be a "camp counselor" and help out children at the same time.

Sarah.JPG

Sarah: Class of 2011
Birthplace:  California, but I moved to Connecticut in the fourth grade. Mrs. Hiller was my first teacher at GFA. It was a good way to start.
Favorite Subject: Math with Mr. Dietrich. He has been my teacher for the past 2 years, and his class is a lot of fun because he promotes healthy competition. It's fulfilling when I figure out a problem on one of his tests because each one is like a puzzle. I also enjoy English class because I love to read. My favorite books that we have read in school so far are The Sun Also Rises, The Great Gatsby, and Beowulf. The English Department does a great job encouraging our interest in literature.
Other Activity:  My favorite activity is soccer. Along with playing on GFA's Girl's Varsity team, I play all year round on a premier team. I have been playing soccer since I was about four years old, and I love it. Soccer is great way to learn to work with others as well as gain confidence.
