Admission Process for K - 5th Grade

When applying to an independent school, it is important to determine if the school is a "good fit" for your child and your family. The application process at GFA provides parents with the opportunity to tour the school, share information about their child and meet with a member of the Admission Office. Click here for a brief Admission Checklist.  The application process is as follows:

Application Deadlines

  • Completed Kindergarten - 5th grade applications due January 13, 2012 

    Kindergarten - 5th Grade

    • Parent Appointment - mid-September to mid-January
      • Please call (203) 256-7514 to schedule a parent interview and campus tour.
      • The Parent Appointment allows you to discuss your child with the Head of Lower School Admission, learn more about the school, and tour the campus.
      • Please allow one hour for the appointment if you are new to the School and one-half hour if you are the parent of a current GFA student or the parent of a child whose file has been reactivated.
      • Students applying to Grade 5 should accompany their parents for the Parent Appointment.  Students will meet with the Head of Lower School Admission for a student interview.
    • Application for Admission-Part I
      Kindergarten - 5th grade: Due January 13, 2012
      • On-line applications are preferred.  Applicants who apply online will be able to check the status of their application at any time.  The Application for Admission must be completed and returned to the Admission Office accompanied by a non-refundable application fee. Checks should be made payable to Greens Farms Academy.  If applying for Financial Aid, the application fee is waived.  The Application for Admission- Part I must be submitted prior to the Student Visit Day.
    • Parent Statement - Due January 13, 2012
      • The Parent Statement allows you to share information about your child and your family so that we can gain some insight into your child's personality and your family's educational priorities.
    • Teacher Recommendation 
      Kindergarten-5th grade: Due January 13, 2012 
      • Please submit the teacher recommendation form to your child's current school after November 1st  to allow the teacher to get to know your child during the Fall.  Then, have your child's current teacher fill out the form and mail it directly to GFA.
      • Please use the extracurricular form if your child is in a school district where teachers do not complete recommendation forms (please let us know if this is the case).
    • Financial Aid Application - Due January 13, 2012
      • Applications for Financial Aid will be distributed at the December Financial Aid workshop.  For further information, please refer to the GFA Financial Aid page.

     



    Additional Kindergarten Procedures

    (File must be complete by January 13, 2012)

    • Gesell Developmental Assessment - December, 2011
      • We will call you to schedule the Assessment after we receive the Application for Admission- Part I.
      • The Gesell Developmental Assessment is administered one-on-one at GFA. Please allow 45 minutes for this appointment.
    • Kindergarten Play Day -  January, 2012
      • All of our Kindergarten applicants are required to come to the School to work and play with our teachers in the classroom. This visit gives us the opportunity to observe the social and emotional development of the candidates and the kids get to interact with each other and have fun!
      • Please allow an hour for the morning visit. Parents are welcome to stay at the School.


    Additional 1st Grade Procedures

    (File must be complete by January 13, 2012)

    • Transcript and Transcript Release Form - Due January 13, 2012
      • Please have the school complete the Transcript Release form and mail this with the Transcript directly to GFA.
      First Grade Testing: January, 2012
      • We will call you to schedule the Testing after we receive the Application for  Admission- Part I.
      • Our first grade testing is conducted one-on-one with the Head of Lower School Admission. The test includes language arts, writing, and math work and was designed by our classroom teachers.


    Additional 2nd - 4th Grade Procedures

    (File must be complete by January 13, 2012)

    •  Transcript and Transcript Release Form - Due January 13, 2012
      • Please have the school complete the Transcript Release form and mail this with the Transcript directly to GFA.
    • Testing -  February 4, 2012
      • Students are required to attend in-house testing for students applying to 2nd, 3rd, and 4th grade.  Please allow an hour and a half for testing.
    • Student Visit -
      • As there are no natural openings in Grades 2-4, accepted students will have an opportunity to spend a morning at GFA before contracts are due.


    Additional 5th Grade Procedures

    (File must be complete by January 13, 2012)

    • Transcript and Transcript Release Form - Due January 13, 2012
      • Please have the school complete the Transcript Release form and mail it with the child's Transcript directly to GFA.
    • ISEE Testing - Results are due to GFA by January  13, 2012
      • Students take a separately administered standardized test, the ISEE (Independent School Entrance Exam). GFA offers two test dates  (Dec. 10th and Jan. 7th) for the ISEE exam in the late fall and early winter, or it may also be taken at other schools. Information about registering for this exam can be found at www.iseetest.org.
    • Student Visit - November to January
      • Please call (203) 256-7514 to schedule your child's visit.
      • Student Visits give applicants a chance to experience the GFA culture firsthand. We schedule visits between Monday and Wednesday from 8:30am-12:30pm.
      • Visiting students may want to wear attire similar to our dress code, but this is not necessary. Boys and girls in the Lower School wear navy blue, green or white collared shirts and gray, navy blue or khaki colored pants. Girls also wear the GFA school kilt, and visitors are welcome to wear a skirt or dress of their own choosing. Sneakers or other comfortable shoes are appropriate on visiting day.
      • Your child should also bring a peanut free snack and a book on the day of his/her visit. Parents should check in at the front reception area and drop off and pick up their child in the Admission waiting room.
