Special Day for Special People

The community service theme for twelfth grade is "exploring the world outside their comfort zone." The goal is to allow students to take responsibility for enriching the lives of others on their own intiaitive and with minimal prompting; and, to encourage our students to reach out in friendship to find worth in individuals they might not have otherwise considered.

GFA's bowling friends have been enjoying a day of fun with our students for over 30 years. These friends of GFA are inviduals who were born with physical abnormalities whether thru Down's Syndrome and/or other birth defects. Despite this, all of them are living on their own in group homes, have had at least a high school education; and, they all hold down jobs. Very active in their communities, they participate yearly in the Special Olympics. CLASP, the organization that provides outside activities for them, is made up of parents, friends, social workers and care givers who give of their time to make sure that these individuals have full and enriching lives. GFA students have been an integral part the lives of these same individuals for many years.
