A Lecture by Dr. Paula Chu
Asian-American adolescent girls have the highest rates of depressive symptoms of all racial/ethnic and gender groups. Asian American college students report higher levels of depressive symptoms than white students. Asian American students as a group experience significantly more depression, anxiety, andisolation and have lower self-esteem and self-concept when compared to European Americans. It is not mere coincidence that Asian Americans are less likely to seek mental health services and are more likely to have psychotic diagnoses in inpatient and outpatient settings; these patterns relate directly to our own challenges as parents to "hear" and make room for our children's emotional lives. Without strong relational skills, children are left to resolve emotional battles on their own, an overwhelming task for any member of the human family. It is essential that we understand the importance of being emotional coaches to our children as their best defense against mood disorders and suicidal thoughts. Come and participate in a free interactive workshop by a recognized therapist that will help us help our children.
