Lower School Counseling

The elementary school years are an exciting and critical time in the development of intellectual curiosity, social skills and emotional knowledge.   Research on learning continues to underscore the relationship between academics and emotional intelligence -- and the importance of both in producing a healthy and productive student and person. As they do with academics, young children acquire strategies and skills to further emotional, social and behavioral competency.

The goal at Greens Farms Academy is to educate the whole child and to address each of these critical strands of development.  Several supports are in place toward this end: teachers, parents and counselors work together throughout the year to communicate about each child and ensure success in the classroom, on the playground and at home. Beginning in grade 2, developmental guidance lessons are taught weekly in the classroom. These Life Skills classes feature such topics as self-esteem, emotions, making and keeping friends, communication, acknowledging diversity, goal setting and problem solving. Small Groups are available in the lower school as well, and provide a supportive environment where students can address specific issues or concerns.  These can include “Banana Splits,” for kids dealing with divorce, grief groups, and social skills groups, as well as less structured friendship groups to encourage grade-wide socializing. The Counselor is also a resource for lower school parents and students via one-on-one meetings, consultation with other school personnel, and referral to other professionals in the community.

Life Skills Classes – GFA’s developmental guidance curriculum

Classroom lessons in developmental guidance ("Life Skills" classes) are held for one period each week  in grades 2, 3, 4, and 5.  Self-esteem, feelings identification, relationship-building, acknowledging diversity, problem solving and conflict resolution are some of the topics included.

The curriculum acknowledges the strengths and limitations of each stage of a child's development, and lessons build on learning from previous years. The subject of  “emotions,” for example, is explored by second graders as they define each feeling word and work to recognize corresponding facial expressions;  fifth graders may take part in a skit on communicating specific emotions to a friend or parent. Classes are lively and interactive, and include hands-on exercises, role-playing, small group and class-wide discussion.   All lessons adhere to state-wide student competencies established in 2008 by the Connecticut School Counselor Association.

Small Group Counseling:

Small group meetings are held weekly during recess or lunch and are established by age. These groups provide a place of mutual support for students where they are free to discuss issues important to them and to learn from others with similar experiences. Groups are established on an as-needed basis, depending on the changing circumstances of our lower school students from year to year.

  • Banana Splits:  Divorce is a fact of life in the 21st century.  Whether parents separated two weeks ago or two years ago, most kids welcome the chance to talk through their feelings with others in similar situations.  Fun and helpful exercises, new friendships, and a chance to hear that it does get better – from kids who have been there!

  • Friendship Group – in much the same way extra math help benefits a struggling student,  social groups can provide a “tool box”  of strategies and  skills for children facing difficulties in social growth.  Awareness, empathy, turn-taking, conversation starters –  the ins and outs of developing friendships-- are explored and practiced in a fun, low-key environment.
