Language Arts, science, social studies, math, art, drama and music are often integrated into an in-depth study of specific topics or themes. The studies might relate to a particular culture or period in history, or they might be seasonal or environmental explorations. Anywhere from several weeks to several months might be devoted to this study with an opportunity to explore the mythology and folklore, practice the crafts and art forms, and study the history and geography of a culture. Literature, art, music, and history bring the values, perceptions and lifestyle of a people closer to the children, helping them gain an appreciation both of that which is unique and that which is shared by all humankind.
By using community resources and the outdoor environment as our classroom, the opportunities for “hands on” experiences abound. Whatever theme is being investigated, it is usually integrated across disciplines; cooking, art, science experiments, writing, reading, etc. The result is a multifaceted approach to a particular topic through which the children gain observational skills, acquire factual information, and learn to appreciate diversity in the world around them. |
