About Us

Greens Farms Academy began as an independent day school in 1925 in Westport, Connecticut.  Today it's a K-12 school with 685 diverse students from 30 surrounding towns.  Students commute by car, van and Metro North train.  The campus covers 42 acres bordering three ecosystems--Long Island Sound, a salt marsh and an Audubon wilderness--all of which serve as outdoor classrooms.

We have found that families send their children to GFA for three main reasons:

  • Head of School Janet M. Hartwell was appointed in 2003. Formerly the Assistant Head of School at Groton, she has a B.A. from the University of Leeds, a post graduate Diploma in Education from Moras House, Edinburgh and an M.A. from Teachers College, Columbia University. Janet spent many years living and working in the Middle East, which fueled her interest in helping all students to develop a global perspective.
Janet is the current President of the Connecticut Association of Independent Schools (CAIS).

    Dominant culture of achievement
  • Close faculty/student relationships
  • Attention to character
In 2010, GFA launched a school-wide initiative, the World Perspectives Program, which exposes students to global issues confronting our world and to ways of creating a more sustainable future. Those with a particular interest in this program can focus during the high school years and graduate with a Concentration in Global Studies.

Academics at GFA are rigorous. The size of the school allows close interaction between faculty and students, and each student is known by many adults--advisors, teachers, coaches and other mentors. Students tend to excel in multiple areas and can be artists, athletes and student council members at the same time. GFA expects involvement and even leadership from its students over the years and provides ample opportunities to explore passions from musical composition to scientific research.  College guidance starts in the ninth grade, with the goal of finding the right fit for each graduate.

Besides the core academics, arts and athletics that take place every day at GFA, visitors often remark on the Community Service activities and off-campus opportunities available throughout the Lower, Middle and Upper Schools.
